Origin of the Story of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp

The story of Aladdin is one the most read and cherished stories of all time. This classic story is associated with the book "the Arabian nights". Though the story of Aladdin and his magic lamp was not part of the text originally later this story was added to the book by Antoine Galland. Based on a short folk story narrated by the Syrian Maronite storyteller Hanna Diyab, he added this tale to the book "The Arabian nights.”

There is no doubt that kids have always loved different versions of the Aladdin and Mowgli stories but according to various scholars, the origin of the classic Aladdin and his magic lamp story goes way back to the mediaeval period. In addition, the story was first published in 1712.

Brief Short Summary of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp

This short tale about Aladdin and his magic lamp is an adaptation of the original story to make it more adventurous, fun and easy to understand for the kids. The story begins with a young boy whose name is Aladdin.

He lived far away in the Middle East with his mother. To support his mother financially, he used to sell fruits in the market nearby his house. One day a rich merchant from Arabia came looking for Aladdin. The merchant told his mother that "I want to take Aladdin with me to Arabia for some work and will give him a lot of money in return so that you both never have to work again or sell fruits in the market". Hearing this, she got excited and agreed to send Aladdin with the merchant.

As Aladdin and the merchant were walking they stopped in an isolated place. Aladdin got suspicious and thought "Why did he stop at a place like this?" Soon after they stopped the merchant pulled out a magic powder from his pocket and threw it on the ground and that is when Aladdin realised he is not just a merchant but a magician. After a few seconds, when the smoke from the powder vanished, a cave appeared there out of nowhere.

The merchant looked at Aladdin and ordered him to go inside the cave and collect as much gold as he wanted. The merchant also told Aladdin, "Inside the cave, you will also see an old lamp which you have to get for me".

Once his pockets were full, he looked for the old lamp, and as he found it, he walked towards the entrance to get out of the cave. But after trying, he could not get out of the cave, and upon asking for help from the merchant, he refused and demanded the lamp first. Aladdin thought, "He will leave me inside the cave if I give him the lamp." Being frustrated by this, the merchant shut the cave's door with magic powder and left.

This made Aladdin scared and he cried for help but no one listened. After getting tired, he sat and started cleaning the lamp. After a while, a genie appeared from the light and said: "My master, I am the genie of this lamp and you have three wishes to make". Upon hearing this Aladdin asked him to take him to his home. The genie fulfilled his wish, and he was returned to his mother.

After his first wish, Aladdin asked Genie to give him a big palace with all the riches in the world. His second wish was also granted. Time passed and he got married and kept the lamp with himself.

One day out of nowhere the merchant returned and asked Aladdin's wife to give him the lamp. Unaware of his deeds, Aladdin's wife gave him the lamp. The merchant asked the genie to transport Aladdin's house and family to a dessert. When Aladdin came to know of the merchant's wicked deeds he immediately took the lamp from him before he could make another wish.

After Aladdin got the lamp back he asked Genie to make everything as it was and make the merchant disappear from their lives. Aladdin and his family lived happily together after this.
