The Hindu mythological epic Ramayana has around 24,000 verses written in pure Sanskrit, later converted into Hindi. The story of Angada is one of the verses from Ramayana; it depicts the scene when Angad was sent to Ravana's palace to warn him before the war. Angad very fiercely stood before the evil king and offerd him advice to surrender in the war and accept defeat from Lord Rama.
This tale perfectly depicts why it is important not to let ego and arrogance come in your way because they can ruin everything.
Before jumping onto knowing the whole story, let us first know who was Angada.
Angada was the youngest son of the Vanara kingdom, king Bali. Angada was a vanara and actively took part in the lord Rama conquest to save Sita from Ravana. Angada was the prince of Kishkinda and later became the king of Kishkindha. He bravely fought against the abductor of the Mata Sita and went to Ravana as a peace manager.
The tale starts when Lord Rama and his vanar army manage to cross the long ocean with the help of the water goddess, who allows Rama to place stones and make a floating bridge. After a long journey, lord Rama and his army finally cross the huge ocean and reach Lanka. At that time, it was known as golden Lanka as it was made of gold and other precious metals.
Before the big war, lord Rama made one more effort to stop the war and its destruction. As it was the war between the gods and the evils, it would cause a lot of destruction and loss of life. Thus, Lord Rama chose Angada to go to Ravana as a messenger and offer peace.
Angada saw Rama as his lord and was very loyal to him. Thus, Angada accepted the duty even after knowing the danger and risk. Angada immediately flew off to the palace as the messenger of peace and friendship. He flew through the window and stood before the evil king Ravana with courage.
Angada Confronting Evil King Ravana
Everyone at the court was shocked and confused, while Angada stood there with full pride. The evil Ravana asked him, "What brought you here? I am sure you are the great Bali's son Angada." Angada nodded his head and said, "I was sent by my lord Rama as a peace messenger, I would like to convey the message that lord Rama told me." Angada continued, "Lord Rama would like to offer a friendship hand toward you, in return, you must return goddess Sita to us and stop the war.”
Ravana burst out of anger and shouted "I would die rather than make peace with the enemy and surrender." To this Angada replied, "As you wish. Just know that this was the last chance for you to save yourself and your kingdom and you rejected it. Now, nothing can stop lord Rama from taking Mata Sita back and destroying this golden city." Ravana couldn't stand it anymore and ordered the soldiers to catch and prison him. Angada jumped off the balcony and somehow managed to run away from there.
The story teaches to remain calm even in situations of grave danger, just like Angada was able to escape from Lanka.
Also, Ravana knew that he was weak against Lord Rama and his army, yet he refused to accept peace due to arrogance and ego. This foolishness led to the end of him and his kingdom. Therefore we must not put others' lives in danger for the sake of our own ego.
Parents should definitely tell their kids different mythological stories especially story of Angada to make them aware of their cultures, tradition, and very rich mythology. This would develop a sense of love and faith in their religion and ethics.
