Bamboo and the Turtle Story

Bamboo, a 12-year-old boy, tried to see the parade as he walked along with the crowd. His father always told him never to follow tourists; otherwise, they would take him for a beggar!

He walked down the road and saw his father's temple in the distance. The door was open! Bamboo had always wanted to go inside, peeking through iron bars at a huge stone turtle he had heard about but had never seen before.

Whenever his father bought a new stone turtle, the boy would ask:” Dad, why did you get another turtle? Tigers and lions are way cooler! Can turtles talk?“His dad always responded with, “No, honey. Stone turtles do not talk at all."

He walked quickly towards the temple. Before entering, he checked again to ensure no one was looking his way. As quietly as possible, he closed the door behind him and hurried over to the big turtle with a tablet on its back.

Surprisingly, the turtle started talking! "Ho ho," he said to Bamboo. "What are you doing under here?

Hearing this, Bamboo asked, "You talk?"

“Well, yes. I am a living creature with all the rights afforded to any other being on earth," said the turtle.

“Really?” said Bamboo, clearly surprised.

“Yes,” he answered. “I have been in this temple for years now. I want to get out in the world.”

Maybe I could help you out,” Bamboo said. “I can come in at night and open the doors for you.”

”You have promised, so stay true to your word.”

” I will not break my promise.”

”Thank you very much. See you tonight.”

Bamboo said goodbye and went out of the door.

Bamboo stole the key from his sleeping father and went to the temple. But he hesitated about what to do next when he arrived at his destination.

“What about this fairy keeper stone tablet?” Bamboo cried.“It is so heavy that I cannot carry it!”

No need to worry; It would not fit through the door.” The turtle said, “It will slide off my back and land on the floor.”

“Interesting, but be safe.”

The turtle took a step. The fairy keeper stone tablet wobbled but did not fall off. To the door, the turtle kept walking as planned! At that moment, it crashed into tiny pieces on impact with the floor.

“What will Father say when he finds out about this?” Bamboo asked himself.

The turtle reassured Bamboo that no one is watching them.

The turtle carried Bamboo into the air when they set off on their journey.

After an awkward silence, "It is Dragon!" Turtle cried out. "And there is Phoenix! They are back!"

Bamboo looked in horror at the two terrifying creatures that had just landed next to them.

“It has been years since I saw you, turtle!” Dragon exclaimed.

“How did you manage to escape?” Phoenix asked.

Turtle praised Bamboo, saying, “I could not have done it without him.” The dragon was impressed with Bamboo. In gratitude for saving the turtle Phoenix gave Bamboo a colourful feather from one of his wings.

Dragon removed one of his scales and gave it to Bamboo. As soon as the scale touched his hand, it turned to gold. The two said their goodbyes before flying off in separate directions."

Bamboo felt himself slipping from the turtle. He fell miles from the sky, certain that he would be dead. He tried to grab branches along his way down but soon landed with a thud.

His father, who had been watching him sleep for hours under a large stone turtle, shouted. "Your chores!"

“Huh?” he said, half asleep. “Did I not die… ?”

Bamboo walked out of the temple, half confused and half asleep and his father had just locked the door.
