Bharata in Ramayana

The Ramayana, one of the two great Hindu epics, is filled with interesting characters. Bharata, the ideal brother, is a part of that. This story describes the character of Bharat when he goes to the jungle and asks his father to become the next king of Ayodhya.

Summary of the Bharata, the Ideal Brother Story

After telling Rama and Lakshmana about their father's death, Bharata attempted to convince the two brothers that it was time for them to return to Ayodhya as emperor and commander. However, both brothers adamantly refused such an arrangement because a king should not abandon his kingdom in times of crisis.

Upon receiving King Janaka's explanation that only under circumstances in which Bharata loved Rama more than anyone else could he help him live righteously, Bharata gave up his efforts to take Rama back home before fourteen years passed.

Bharata was deeply disappointed when Rama left for the forest. Still, he returned to Ayodhya on receiving a promise from Rama that he would return promptly at the end of fourteen years. When fourteen years had passed, and Rama did not return, he vowed to give up his life by immolation.

Bharata agreed to govern Ayodhya, not as its ruler but as a representative of Rama. The people supported Bharata because he was the king of Kosala and Ayodhya. Still, Bharata placed Rama's sandals at the foot of the royal throne, and neither sat upon it nor crowned himself.

During Bharata's reign, the kingdom was prosperous and safe. But he longed for Rama to return; during this time, Bharata did not forgive his mother, Kaikeyi. He dedicatedly served Rama's mother, Kousalya (or Kosala), and Lakshmana's mother, Sumitra.

Rama's deep love and esteem for Bharata is evident in his declaration that his love for Hanuman was on par with Rama's affection towards his brother.
