A Blessing in Disguise

There was a Chinese man who lived in the plains near the Great Wall of China. He was very happy with his business. He traded horses and collected the best breeds. He had a son who helped him in the business.

He travelled to distant places to collect the rarest horse breeds. He was accompanied by his son on his journey. The old man was getting ready to retire and make his son the owner of the business.

He used to ride the best breeds with his son every day. They took care of the horses very well.

A Stallion Escaped

One day, one of his stable servants left a door open, and a rare stallion ran away.

The entire town was aware of the unfortunate event. Well-wishers came to console the old man. To their surprise, the old man was not at all unhappy. He was not sorry that a simple mistake made the stallion flee. The people of the town could not believe it.

A few days later, the stallion returned with a rare white mare. The mare was of a wild breed. The old man was happy that the stallion was back with a mare.

One day, his son was riding the wild valuable mare. The mare was trained well, and she behaved properly. Suddenly, the mare slipped and fell. She could not control her legs when she stepped on a pothole in the grassland.

The mare landed on the right leg of the son. He suffered a big fracture. Doctors said that the leg would not be the way it was. It means the son will be partially crippled.

The well-wishers in the village came to console the old man. To their surprise, he was not sorry at all. He said that accidents could not be predicted and there is no reason to feel sorry. He is also not angry with the mare as she is just an animal and did not do it intentionally.

The whole village thought the old man had gone crazy. They left.

A War Broke in the Country

One day, a war broke out in China. The emperor ordered the young men in every family to join the army for the sake of the country. Everyone except the partially crippled son had to go to the war.

The war did not end well. Many lost their sons and relatives. The old man’s son was relieved from the war as he met an accident a few years back.
