One fine day, a cock was searching and scratching the earth under the wall of a cottage. He luckily found a bean to munch it up, but quite unluckily choked on it when he tried to swallow the bean. When he choked and gasped for air, he stretched himself out, and he lay on the earth, without breathing.

His good mistress saw him and ran up to him for help, she asked: “Mr. Cock, why are you lying there like that, as if you can’t breathe?” “Oh, mistress! I’ve choked myself with a bean,”  the cock answered. The cock ordered, “Go and fetch butter from the cow.”

His mistress came running to the cow and said, “Hi Mrs. Cow, please give me some butter for my cock is lying breathless, he has choked himself with a bean.” The cow answered: “Go and ask the hay-makers to give some hay.”

The mistress came to the hay-makers and said,

“Good morning Hay-makers, give me some hay! The hay is for the cow who after eating will give me some butter, while the butter is for my cock who is lying there and can’t breathe as unfortunately, he choked himself with a bean.” To this, the hay-makers answered, “Lady, ask the oven to give you some loaves.”

She went running to the oven and said, “Oh! Oven, give me some loaves! The loaves are a treat for the haymakers, who will give me some hay in return, while the hay’s for the cow, who will give me some butter in return, and with the help of the butter my cock can free his throat, quick please he is gasping for air, he choked on a bean!” The oven answered, “That’s sad! Well, then go and ask the wood-cutters for some wood.” 

And she came to the woodcutters and said, “Good woodcutters, give me some wood! The wood will be for the oven, who will give me some loaves, the loaves are for the hay-cutters, who will, in turn, give me some hay, the hay’s for the cow, who will give me some butter, the butter’s for my cock who is lying there and can’t breathe, he’s choked himself with a bean.” And they answered, “First go and ask the smith for an axe, we need to cut the wood with an axe.”

The mistress asking for help

So she came to the smith and said, “Hey Smith, give me an axe! The axe is for the wood-cutters, who will give me some wood, the wood’s for the oven, who will give me some loaves, the loaves are for the hay-makers, who will give me some hay, the hay’s for the cow, who will give me some butter, and the butter’s for my cock who is lying there and can’t breathe, he’s choked himself with a bean.” And he answered, “Go into the forest and get some burned charcoal.”

So she went into the forest, with a bundle of sticks, and burned some charcoal. Then, she took the charcoal to the smith, and he gave her an axe. She next went with the axe to the wood-cutters, and there the wood-cutters gave her some fresh wood. Those wood she took to the oven, and the oven gave her some tasty loaves.

She took the loaves to the hay-makers, they had the loaves, and the hay-makers gave her some hay. Then, she took hay to the cow, who finally gave her some butter. She brought the butter to the cock to rescue him, and the cock gulped it down slowly, and ah now he could swallow the bean.

After this, the cock jumped up merrily and started singing, “Cock-a-doodle-doo! I was sitting under the wall, plaiting shoes when I lost my awl, but I found a little coin, and I bought a little scarf and gave it to a pretty girl.”

This story was about Mr Cock and how his good mistress rescued him from choking on a bean and brought back his life. The cock was so happy that he merrily then sang a song, as a gesture of thanks.
