The soldier replied that he was broke and also hungry. He had no money left with him to survive. The Devil provided him with a particular solution, i.e., if he came to hell and served the Devil for the next seven years, he would have the money he needed.

In addition, the Devil had put certain conditions, which were he had to refrain from cutting his nails. The Devil also said that he could not bathe, comb his hair, etc.

The soldier agreed to all this and started the work. He did all the necessary things mentioned by the Devil. One day he did something which the Devil had said not to, and if he did so, he would become sick for his entire life, but out of curiosity, he did that.

Therefore the Devil did not take any action against the soldier. The Devil was so forgiving, and he understood human curiosity. When the soldier got the reward at completion, he was unhappy with what he received, but he never complained about it or showed any greediness.

But later, he realised when he saw all of them turned into gold. When the soldier, after some time, went to his father, he played music. The king got so happy with his music that he told Hans to marry his eldest daughter.

The eldest did not want to, so he married the youngest, who was fine with it. Therefore the Devil's sooty brother got the king's kingdom when he died and had a lot of wealth.
