Gerda and Kai
One day, Kai was playing with his sledge in the snow. He saw a big white sleigh coming very fast. He had a plan. He stepped in front of the sleigh’s route. It slowed down. He quickly went behind it and tied his sledge to the sleigh to ride faster.
He did not know it belonged to an evil snow queen. The snow queen knew about the boy playing with her sledge. She rode faster and faster.
Now, Kai felt very cold from the gust of wind and snow. She stopped and asked her, “Do you want me to help you with the cold? I can kiss you on the cheek and you will not feel it again.”
The evil snow queen
Kai agreed. She kissed and he did not feel cold at all. She said, “I can give you another kiss and you will forget about everything.” Before Kai could react, she gave him another kiss on his cheek and he forgot about Gerda.
The snow queen said, “My third kiss will be yours, but I have some for you to do.” Kai was enchanted by her. He left his sledge and stepped on the sleigh. The queen took him to her icy castle.
Gerda was unaware of this incident. She waited for Kai to show up. He was not there. She was restless.
She asked everyone in the village about him. Nobody knew what happened. She cried, “Oh Kai, where are you?”
Hearing her cry, a crow replied, “I know where he is. He is taken captive by the evil snow queen. She lives in an icy castle far away from here.”
Gerda said, “Can you take me there?” The crow said and told her to follow.
They travelled for a month and found an icy castle in the distance. She was about to go inside but the crow stopped her. The crow said, “Wait until the snow queen is out.”
Gerda waited for a day. The queen came out on her sleigh and the huge door closed behind her.
Gerda climbed the icy walls of the castle as the main door did not open. He saw Kai working in a room. His skin was pale and blue. She cried, “Kai. Kai”
Kai did not reply. He has no memories of her. She ran and embraced her best friend and sobbed.
Her tears melted the icy covering on Kai’s skin. It felt warm and he remembered Gerda. He was weak. Gerda told him, “Hold on. I will rescue you.”
She tore and tied bed sheets and made a huge rope. She then slowly came down with Kai on her back.
The crow helped them to get back to their village. Kai recovered very fast as he was free from the memory spell.
