Sam and Tom were identical twins, so much so that even their mother had trouble tearing them apart during the first few days of their lives.

Although they looked alike, Sam and Tom were very different. While Sam had no friends, Tom was great at making them.

Sam loved sweets, but Tom was a picky eater and liked spicy food. Sam was mommy's favourite, and Tom was daddy's favourite. While Sam gave away what he had in abundance, Tom hoarded his resources!

Their father tried to share his fortune equally as Sam and Tom grew up. However, Tom disagreed with this arrangement and argued that whoever proved himself more intelligent and stronger would get a bigger share of the wealth.

Sam and his brother agreed that whoever walked the farthest would be declared the winner. Their father then suggested a competition between them, where each brother would walk as far as possible before sunset and return home.

The winner would receive a larger share of the money, and the others proportionately less. The competitors were not allowed to wear watches or track the time another way.

The next day, Sam and Tom set out walking. The sun shone brightly as they started down the road - it would be a hot race! Sam walked slowly but steadily while Tom sprinted ahead, eager to win money and fortune.

Sam knew it would be ideal to walk as far as possible until noon and then starting from home; since the time taken to walk back home was the same.

Sam decided to return home at noon to reach there on time.

However, Tom was so determined to earn more that he did not return home until midday. He walked twice as long as Sam had and thought he would still be able to get back before sunset. It was not until the sun turned orange that Tom realised how late it was getting and started running!

Unfortunately, before he reached halfway home, the sun had set, and darkness engulfed his path. With weary feet dragging behind him, Tom turned back towards home; he had lost the race.
