There was a village near the foothills of a mountain. There lived two brothers, Ram and Mohan, who got a piece of land from their father. They decided to sow rice in it as the season was good.
Ram decided to work on the field but Mohan said he would pray to God and that The Almighty will bless him with a good harvest.
They did not decide to divide the field as it was the last wish of their father.
Ram learned how to work in the field from his father. He has got good experience. He bought the best seed in the market and worked hard in the field.
Ram Working in the Field
He asked his brother Mohan to join hands. Mohan did not pay attention and said, “I am praying to God in the temple. He will bless us with a good harvest.” He then went to the temple near the field.
As time passed, paddy saplings grew bigger. Ram and Mohan both were happy. Eventually, the time came when the rice needed to be harvested. Ram asked Mohan, “You have prayed enough. Help me to harvest rice from the field.”
Mohan answered, “I have to pray to God and thank him for the harvest.” He left.
Ram had to do everything all by himself. He worked harder and collected the harvest. He sold it in the market and earned a good amount of money.
It was time to distribute the money among the brothers. Ram said, “I worked alone in the field. I must get a higher amount.” Mohan said, “No, I prayed constantly to God. It is because of His blessings, we have got a good harvest this year. I must be paid higher.”
The dispute grew bigger. They involved the local chief to solve it.
The chief listened to what the brothers had to say very patiently. He then ordered the brothers to buy two sacks of rice from the market. The brother went and bought two sacks. The chief then mixed pebbles in both the sacs.
He said, “By tomorrow, the rice in the sacks should be free from pebbles. The one with the least pebbles will get a higher percentage of the harvest money.”
Ram and Mohan returned home. Ram stayed up all night and sorted pebbles one by one. Mohan sat in his house and prayed to God to get the pebbles sorted.
