Once upon a time, there was a jungle near a village. Many small animals lived in that jungle. There was a hunter in the jungle that caught those animals and sold them in the market.
He used to set traps to catch the rabbits mostly. Because of his daily venture, the population of rabbits started to decline.
When he did not get rabbits, he used to dig the burrows and drag the rabbits out. It was cruel of him to catch those rabbits and take them away from their families. The rabbits pleaded for freedom, but the hunter did not listen to them.
The Bad Hunter
One day, he was out there in the jungle catching rabbits. He got only one rabbit that day and was furious. He was thinking of what to do. Suddenly, he saw a saint in a white robe sitting idle under a tree.
It was evening, and the sun had already set. The forest gets darker very fast. He was hurrying to go home and did not pay attention to the saint.
The saint said, “Listen, son! Stop catching those innocent animals. Leave them alone and lead a life free from cruelty.”
The hunter was already annoyed with his hunt that day. He said with anger, “Why would I listen to you?” The saint said, “Leave the rabbit and set it free. You will feel lighter. Have compassion, and you will lead a happier life.”
The hunter was enraged. He took out his knife and said, “I will kill this rabbit right now.”
The saint said, “Stop! Don’t make decisions when you are in anger. It will cost you dearly.”
The Saint in the Jungle
The hunter did not listen and wanted to kill the rabbit. Suddenly, the knife slipped from his sweaty hands and landed on his right foot.
The knife was sharp. It got embedded in the foot and severely injured him. He was crying in pain and released the rabbit.
The saint said, “I warned you of the consequences. You did not listen. Learn from this incident and decide what you want to be.”
The hunter realized what he had done. He was in pain but enlightened. He limped back to his house and thought about how many animals he had stripped off from their families.
He was alone but felt the sadness of being away from one’s family. He rose with pain and let all the birds and animals free from his cages. The animals were terrified but were happy to be free again. They thanked the changed hunter.
