Introduction to the Origin of River Kaveri

The Story of Kaveri is an Indian bedtime Mythological story which is very popular among children and is well-loved by them. It is a story that teaches children many lessons and values, explaining its popularity. It teaches the children to be selfless and help others around them to their full potential.

The Story of Kaveri

In this section, we will discuss the story and also state a summary of the story:

The story is about a king named Kavera who was highly devoted to Lord Shiva. He did a long to please the Lord, dedicating many years of his life to this.

Pleased with the king, Lord Shiva asked him what it was that he desired. Kavera, the king, asked about ways he could help his subjects live a better and happier life. Upon listening to this, Lord Shiva blessed the king with a daughter, saying how it would be her that would fulfil the king's wish.

The king named the daughter Kaveri and started raising her. Years passed, and the daughter, Kaveri, grew into a beautiful and kind woman.

Kavera, the king, then married the daughter to a sage named Agastya. The sage and the daughter lived happily.

One day a demon named Shoorapadma appeared. It did not let the king's subjects live peacefully by stopping the rain from reaching the village. This resulted in all the rivers drying up, and the village struggled with water scarcity.

One day, when sage Agastya was about to leave for a bath, he decided to turn his wife Kaveri into the water in fear of leaving her all alone. He then kept the water in a Kamandala. He took the Kamandala to the dried-up river, kept it at the river bank, and was about to enter it.

Seeing this, Lord Ganpati turned into a cow. He pushed the Kamandala into the river, making Kaveri, inside the Kamandala, spill over the water of the almost empty river, merging with the other water bodies. This is the origin of River Kaveri.

This shows us how selfless Kaveri was and how she cared about the well-being of the several people living in that village, thus teaching us not to be selfish and self-centred but rather to be kind and always care about the well-being of the people around us.
