Rukmi was the son of Bhishmaka, king of Vidarbha. He was also the brother of Rukmini, wife of Shri Krishna. Rukmi was trained in the arts of warfare and was a mighty warrior. He possessed an intense character and attained Brahmastra from sage Parshuram and Devastra from sage Druma. However, Rukmi was cold and arrogant; even his father could not control him.
Rukmi wished that his sister married Shishupala, the King of the Chedi kingdom. But Rukmini was interested in marrying Krishna. Thus, Krishna abducted Rukmini with her consent, and they eloped. When this news reached Rukmi and Shishupala, they were red with anger. First, Shishupala tried to stop them but was defeated by Krishna. This began the hatred between Krishna and Shishupala.
Next, Rukmi went after Krishna. But nobody stood a chance against him. Just as Krishna was about to kill Rukmi, Rukmini stopped him. But as a sign of defeat, Krishna shaved Rukmi’s head and headed to Dwarka with Rukmini. There they got married officially, and all celebrated the occasion.
Rukmi established a city called Bhojakta, made it the capital of Vidarbha, and stayed there.
Krishna Shaved Rukmi’s Head
Rukmi and the King of Kalinga once challenged Balrama to a game of chess, knowing he wasn’t good at it. To their surprise, when Balrama won, Rukmi started mocking Dwarka and his brother, Lord Krishna. This provokes Balrama, and furious in rage, Balrama kills Rukmi with his mace.
Pandavas, when establishing the city of Indraprastha, organised the Rajasuya Yagya and invited all the kings of Aryavrata. Shishupala and Duryodhana also participated.
Duryodhana and Shakuni knew that once the Yagya was completed, the Pandavas would become the supreme power in the entire Aryavrata. To stop this from happening, they planned on obstructing the Yagya. They used Shishupala as their pawn for their mischievous acts.
Given the history between Krishna and Shishupala, he was more than happy to insult him as Krishna was the chief guest for Yudhishthira’s coronation. He also questioned the relationship between Krishna and Draupadi, calling it illicit. Enraged by this, Krishna immediately killed Shishupala using his Sudarshan chakra. This is how the story of Krishna and Shishupala came to an end.
Rukmini was the first queen of Lord Krishna. After Krishna left his mortal body, Rukmini and other wives of Krishna self-immolated themselves in the same burning funeral as Krishna’s.
