The old man and three young men story is one of the best bedtime stories that you can read to your kids. The Old Man Story in English 

In a village, there lived three strong men who were nothing but lazy. They didn’t like to do any work and were always making fun of other people who worked hard. One of them used to say, “Why should we work hard when you can laze around and sleep.” The people who lived in the village were very annoyed with the men and the life that they lived. They always used to talk about men and their lazy habits. “What life is this? All they do is sit around and poke fun at the expense of others,” they said. But these words never bothered the men and they kept on with their lifestyle.

One day, when the young men were roaming around the village, they saw an old man working in the field. His hair was gray and he looked very old. He seemed to be very weak but that didn’t stop him from planting the trees and tending to them in the field. The young men were very surprised to see such an old man do so much hard work. So, they started making fun of the man. One of them said, “Old man, you are so foolish. Don’t you know that you will be long gone before these trees bear any fruit?” The old man just ignored him and kept on with his work.

Then the other man said, “What is the use of planting the trees now at your age when you won’t even get to taste the fruits from them?”. The old man again ignored the snide remark and kept tending to the trees. He understood that these lazy men didn’t understand the value of hard work and leaving something behind for others to enjoy.

The Old Man’s Lesson to the Three Men

The third man then said, “You are very foolish, old man. You will not get to taste a single fruit. It will take years for the trees to bear the fruits and by then you will not be alive.” The old man had heard enough from these lazy young lads. He smiled and answered, “I know I will be long gone before these trees bear fruit. But I am not doing this for myself but for the future generations that come after me.” When the young lads couldn’t understand him, he explained “People who come after me will be able to taste the amazing fruits that these trees bear. They will then remember me and what I had done for them. This way, my hard work will pay off because I will still be in their minds and hearts as they thank me for the fruit. But you three young men, despite being so strong, do absolutely nothing. So what will people remember you for?”.

Now the men finally understood what the old man meant and they decided to turn their lives around and not be lazy anymore.
