The proud boy had made friends with two stray dogs. There was a flock of geese near the river bank. He spent time with them. Apart from these animals, he liked to spend time with the trees.

The tailor’s boy started to make faces and provoke the proud boy. His provoking crossed a line. He made sore gestures to him. The proud boy was about to pass him. He stopped, turned and jabbed a fist on his right cheek. He also took his hat and threw it in the dust.
The tailor’s son never experienced this and started to cry profusely. He ran away without picking his hat and cried his eyes out in a carpenter’s yard.

The proud boy took his hat, cleaned the dust and followed the tailor’s boy. He reached the carpenter’s yard and gave back his hat. He said, “You deserved the punch but not the hat. It was rude of me. I am sorry.”
The tailor’s son was astonished. He stopped crying and said, “Why did you return my hat? Aren’t you proud?”
The proud boy said, “Are you not proud?”
The tailor’s son said, “No, I am not!”
The proud boy said, “There is a difference. Your pride makes you accept the foolish things you have done.”
The tailor’s son said, “It takes courage to accept your fault.”
The proud boy said, “This is where you are wrong. Cowardice makes you not accept your faults.” He walked away silently.
