The Old Lady and the Sky

Once upon a time, an old lady lived in a small village. The sky was very low back then. People could touch it. The sky was also very happy to be close to people.

The Happy Sky Shining Close to the Village

The old lady was deaf and took care of her house only. She had no family and nothing else to do rather than take care of her small hut made of straw and mud. She had a small veranda where she used to dry her harvest. One day, she was brooming her veranda. She noticed a lot of dust and leaves lying around. She cleaned it well. She did not know that a storm was coming.

She cleaned it well but the storm approached when she was sleeping. It made the entire hut and veranda dusty again. When she woke up, she found her house all dusty again. She was annoyed and took her broom to clean it again.

The Sky Suffered from Dust

She started brooming again. It seemed to be never-ending. The dust was everywhere. She broomed harder and harder. It made swirls of dusty clouds rise in the sky. The sky was right beneath her. He said, “Can you please broom a little slower? I can’t bear the dust anymore.”

The old woman was deaf. She could not listen to what the sky said to her and kept on dusting the hut and veranda. Eventually, the dust formed a thick cloud and reached the sky’s nose. The sky felt funny in his nose and sneezed loudly. His sneeze caused a huge thundering sound. All the villagers ran away inside their houses in fear. They had never heard the sky so loud.

She did not hear a thing and kept on brooming. The sky repeatedly told the lady to stop but all went in vain. The more she broomed, the more dust formed closer to the sky. He sneezed again and again. It made his eyes watery.

Suddenly, she saw the raindrops falling on her. She yelled at the sky, “Stop or my veranda will be all wet.” The sky could not control his tears due to the dust. He wept profusely and the old lady was angry. She poked the sky with her broom.

The sky was thwacked by the lady repeatedly. He was unable to take it anymore. He jumped back coughing and sneezing. It caused thunder strikes, rain and strong winds blowing from all directions. Her hut and veranda were all dirty again. The sky went higher and higher above the old woman’s reach. Since then, the sky did not come down ever again.
