She is the daughter of Maggie Baird who is an actress and former theatre troupe teacher, and actor Patrick O'Connell. Both of her parents are musicians, and they work on O'Connell's tours. O'Connell is of Irish and Scottish descent. She was brought up in the place of the Highland Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles.
