Bret Hart was born into the Hart wrestling family in Calgary, Alberta, as the eighth child of wrestling patriarch Stu Hart and his wife Helen. He has Greek ancestry through his maternal grandmother and Irish ancestry through his maternal grandfather. His father's ancestors were mostly Scots-Irish, but he also had Scottish and English ancestors. Because his mother Helen was born in New York, Hart is a dual citizen of Canada and the United States.
