Chad Hurley, full name Chad Meredith Hurley (born January 24, 1977), is an American tycoon, co-founder, and former CEO of video sharing websites Youtube. He also co-founded Mix bit. Chad Hurley was ranked 28th position on Business 2.0’s “50 People Who Matter Now List” in June 2006. He and his former Paypal colleague Steve Chen decided to sell YouTube for $1.65 to Google. Chad Hurley worked in eBay Paypal’s division- one of his efforts was greatly seen in designing the original Paypal logo- before co-founding YouTube.

Who  Is Chad Hurley?

Chad Hurley is a renowned entrepreneur and media tycoon who co-founded the most admired video-sharing website YouTube and also served as its chief executive officer (CEO). Chad Hurley was also the former CEO and co-founder of the video-sharing services ‘MixBit’. After completing his college education, he joined the ‘eBay ‘PayPal division and primarily focused on its user interface. He was engrossed in designing the original Paypal logo during his interview. In February 2005, Hurley along with his former Paypal colleagues Steve Chen and Jawed Karim created video sharing aspects of the website YouTube. He was ranked 28th position on Business 2.0’s “50 People Who Matter Now List” in June 2006.

A few months later, he and his former Paypal colleague Steve Chen decided to sell YouTube for $1.65 to Google. The video-sharing website YouTube presently operates as a subsidiary of Google.  He worked as the CEO of ‘YouTube’ till October 2010. In August 2013, Hurley and his friend Steve Chen introduced the video-sharing service MixBit. ‘MixBitis’ is presently known as “Zeen” and was acquired by “Blue Jeans” in 2018.   He was also the co-proprietor of “ Major league Soccer’s (MLS) Los Angeles Football Club and the National Basketball Association’s (NBA).

Chad Meredith Hurley, commonly known as Chad Hurley was born on January 24, 1977, in Reading, Pennsylvania, US. He is the second child of the three children born to his parents Joann and Don Hurley. He is blessed with two siblings named Heather Hurley (elder sister) and Brent Hurley (younger brother). Chad Hurley was brought up near Birdsboro, Pennsylvania.

As a child, he was fond of art and crafts and exhibited incredible artistic skills. As per the different sources, he even sold his art and other handprints during his elementary school years and eventually set up his shop on the paved area outside his house, representing his entrepreneurial skills from an early age. He was also fond of computers and electronic media during his high school years.

In 1995, Chad Hurley joined Twin Valley High School’ in Elverson, Berks County, Pennsylvania to pursue his bachelor's degree. YouTube Founder Chad Hurley was also a standout runner in his age and performed incredibly at Twin Valley High School cross country program. In 1992 and 1994, he had won two ‘PIAA State’ titles for his school. During his high school journey, he was also a member of the career and technical student organization popular as the “Technology Student Association”. 

In 1999, Chad Hurley further joined the Indiana University of Pennsylvania to pursue his BA degree in fine art.

While pursuing his college degree, Hurley was placed in ‘eBay's ‘PayPal’ division. He primarily focused on the user interface of the site and was engrossed in designing the original Paypal logo during his interview, the same logo that PayPal went on to use for over a decade. After Paypal was acquired by eBay, Chad Hurley with his other two colleagues of the company, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, designed the American Video sharing website “ YouTube” in 2005. The primary responsibility of Chad Hurley was to look after the tagging and the video-sharing aspects of the website. 

While creating the video-sharing website, he must have thought he was in a process of restructuring the way people viewed online content. Youtube became one of the fastest-growing websites and went on to become the second-largest search engine in the world after Google. And history was made when one of the fastest-growing websites, YouTube was acquired by Google for a mind-blowing $1.65 billion in October 2006.

In October 2010, Hurley decided to resign as CEO of YouTube and stated he would work as an advisor of YouTube, enabling Salar Kamangar to take over the CEO position.

MixBit

YouTube Founder Chad Hurley launched another website called MixBit in August 2013 which does video editing using smartphones. According to his companion Steve Chen, it was Chad Hurley’s idea to transform Avox into MixBit even before the inception of YouTube. The app resembles other popular short-video recording smartphone apps such as Vine, Vyclone, and Instagram. Its limit is to record stretches up to 256 bits. Each clip can be a maximum of 16 seconds long. In August 2018, BlueJean acquired Mixbit, now known as Zeen.

Chad Hurley also made major investments with the US F1 team, one of the new emergencies in Formula One automobile racing in the season 2010.

In 2010, Chad Hurley married Kathy Clark, daughter of renowned American businessman and computer scientist James H Clark, who created notable Silicon Valley technology companies such as ‘Netscape Communications Corporation’ and ‘Silicon Graphics, Inc.’
