Ayala was born and reared in the Villa Kennedy Housing Projects community in Ro Piedras. He desired to be a professional baseball player and attempted out for the Major League Baseball's Seattle Mariners. He has been hit by a stray round from an AK-47 rifle while taking breaks from a studio recording session with reggaeton star DJ Playero before he could be officially signed. The bullet has never been removed from Ayala's hip, and he attributes the shooting incident to enabling him to focus solely on his music career. Daddy Yankee's international smash single "Gasolina" was published in 2004, and it is regarded with bringing reggaeton to a global audience and making the music genre a global phenomenon.
He has earned over 20 million records since then, making him one of the best-selling Latin performers.

Musical career
1994–1999: Career beginnings
Ayala got shot in the leg while taking a break from a studio recording session and is often regarded as being one of the genre's pioneers. He was fully intending to become a professional baseball player but was shot in the leg while taking a break from a studio recording session. The bullet was never removed, and he attributes his ability to pursue a musical career to this tragedy. With the song "So' Persigueme, No Te Detengas," he made his debut on DJ Playero's Playero 34 mixtape in 1994. No Mercy was his first official studio album as a solo artist, released on April 2, 1995, by White Lion Records and BM Records in Puerto Rico. He tried to replicate Vico C's rap style early on in his career.
He moved on to imitate other musicians in the genre, such as DJ Playero, DJ Nelson, and Tempo, by borrowing components from their styles and combining them with the Dembow rhythm to create his own unique style. As a result, he ultimately abandoned the traditional rap model and was one of the first reggaeton musicians.
Daddy Yankee performed in several of DJ Playero's underground mixtapes throughout the 1990s, which were eventually prohibited by the Puerto Rican government owing to explicit lyrics; these songs would subsequently be one of the first reggaeton tracks ever made. On the album, Playero 36 in 1994, DJ Playero and Daddy Yankee were credited with coining the term "reggaeton" to characterise their music.
Daddy Yankee Life
Daddy Yankee Family- Ayala has maintained much of his private life secret, only mentioning it in interviews on rare occasions. He has stated that he avoids doing so since such information has been the only aspects of his life that are kept private, and that they are a "small treasure." In an interview with Mara Celeste Arrarás in Al Rojo Vivo in 2006, he discussed his relationship with his wife Mireddys González and their children.
Daddy Yankee's family tree claims that his marriage is healthy because he and his wife are "friends above all else," and that he could have attempted to resist other temptations because "weakness is the root of the collapse of countless musicians." He met his wife when they were both young, and at the age of 17, they agreed to marry. Their first child, Yamilette Ayala González, was born as a result of their union.
His first daughter was born when he was seventeen years old, which he characterised as perplexing at first, as well as a difficult experience parenting a daughter at that age.
Political views
In 2008, Ayala did take part in a campaign to encourage people to vote in Puerto Rico's general elections. A concert named "Vota o quédate callado" was part of this project (Vote or Remain Silent).
Ayala backed Republican John McCain for President of the United States in the 2008 election on August 25, 2008, calling McCain a "warrior for the Hispanic population." Ayala mediated a debate named "Vota o quédate callado: los candidatos responden a los jóvenes" as part of this campaign, that broadcast on October 9, 2008.
In November 2019, Ayala opened the first reggaeton museum in the world at Plaza Las Américas.
Legacy
The media has labelled Daddy Yankee the "King of Reggaetón." Vice's Rachel Grace Almeida believes that Daddy Yankee's songs helped to emphasise and normalise the "marginalised" Latino identity. Yankee was also credited with "bringing beauty to the barrio" and "challenging the mainstream media's image of Hispanic poverty in those areas," according to her. CNN and Time magazine named him one of the world's most influential Hispanics. According to Roy Trakin of Pollstar, Luis Fonsi's involvement in "Despacito" helped "transform his native Puerto Rico's music into a global phenomenon."
Barrio Fino, Daddy Yankee's third studio album, pushed reggaeton into the mainstream. "The genre would revitalise sales of Latin music, bring in a new radio format in the United States (Latin Rhythm Airplay), and develop the urban base accountable for many Latin radio singles today," Billboard said of its single "Gasolina." "Daddy Yankee and 'Gasolina' launched the growth of urban Latin music globally," says Nestor Cason, president of Kobalt Music Latin America.
In 2006, he was dubbed "The King of Reggaetón" by The New York Times, which noted that "one bright spot for the music industry was Latin music: sales climbed by 12%, as per Nielsen SoundScan."
Achievements
"Reggaeton just wouldn't be what it is without Daddy Yankee, and there would be no Balvin without Yankee," J Balvin said.
