Cena, whose real name is John Felix Anthony Cena, is an American professional wrestler, actor, television host, and former rapper who is presently signed to the WWE. In 1999, Cena debuted in professional wrestling at Rick Bassman's Ultimate University in California, run by Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW). When Cena was cast in an in-ring role, he began using The Prototype, a semi-robotic character. A Discovery Channel episode called Inside Pro Wrestling School recorded some of this period of his career. In April 2000, he held the UPW Championship of a heavyweight for twenty-seven days. Until March 2001, Cena was a member of the UPW.

Cena made his unsanctioned debut for the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) on a SmackDown taping on October 10, 2000, he was defeated by Mikey Richardson in a dark match. He was given another audition on January 9, 2001, at a SmackDown filming in Oakland, California, on March 13, at a SmackDown taping, he defeated Aaron Aguilera in a dark match.

In 2001, Cena signed a contract (development contract) with the WWF and was assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling's developing area (OVW). Cena made a surprise appearance as the Royal Rumble match's final participant, winning it and the traditional WrestleMania XXIV title opportunity by eliminating Triple H last. Rather than waiting for WrestleMania, Cena used his title shot against WWE Champion Randy Orton at 2008's No Way Out, a match he won by disqualification and thus did not receive the belt.

Cena's original gimmick was as the "Doctor of Thuganomics," a white rapper who wore jerseys, backwards caps, and a chain with a padlock around his neck. Cena, first as "The Prototype" and subsequently as his own name, was known for employing dubious methods to win matches, such as using his chain as a weapon behind the referee's back. Before his battles, Cena would often rap, mocking his opponents, the media, and even the audience. Cena was also known for his "rap bouts," in which he and his opponent alternated rapping on one another. Cena has used this persona three times: during his feud with The Rock in 2012, during a confrontation with Elias at WrestleMania 35 in 2019, and during a brief cameo during his WrestleMania 36 bout with Bray Wyatt.
