Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (born Rachel Meghan Markle on August 4, 1981) is a member of the British royal family and a former actress. Markle was born and raised in Los Angeles. Her acting career began during her time at Northwestern University when she was a student. Her mixed ancestry, she said, contributed to her early professional challenges. Rachel Zane in the American legal drama Suits, in which she appeared for seven seasons (2011–2018), is her most notable acting role. 

She also profited from a strong social media presence, which includes The Tig, a lifestyle site that she ran from 2014 to 2017. As a consequence of The Tig, she gained popularity for her fashion sense, which led to the design and launching of two clothing lines in 2015–2016. Markle became active in charitable work during her acting career, concentrating particularly on women's concerns and social justice.

Rachel Meghan Markle is a mixed-race woman who was born on August 4, 1981, in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, California. Her parents divorced when she was six years old. Doria Ragland, Markle's African American mother, maintains a tight relationship with her. Meghan's white American father, Thomas Markle Sr., worked as a director of photography and lighting for Married with Children, and Meghan used to visit the set on a regular basis as a child. Samantha Markle and Thomas Markle Jr., her paternal half-siblings, are alienated from her father.

As a youngster, Markle attended the Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse in Los Angeles. At the age of 11, she wrote to Procter & Gamble, requesting that a national television ad for dishwashing soap be gender-neutralized. P&G altered the commercial three months later. Despite the fact that she was raised as a Protestant, she graduated from Immaculate Heart High School, a Catholic girls' high school. Markle was admitted into the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Northwestern University (NU) in Evanston, Illinois, in 1999. 

She interned at the American embassy in Buenos Aires after her junior year and explored a political career. She did not, however, receive a high enough score on the Foreign Service Officer Test to continue with the US State Department, and she returned to NU. She portrayed Junior Agent Amy Jessup in the first two episodes of the second season of Fox's Fringe. Markle had cameo cameos in the films Get Him to the Greek, Remember Me, and The Candidate in 2010, as well as Horrible Bosses in 2011. She was paid 187,000 dollars for her role in Remember Me and 171,429 dollars for a short film called The Candidate. Her character, Rachel Zane, began her career as a paralegal and rose through the ranks to become an attorney. She worked on Suits for nine months a year in Toronto. According to Fortune magazine, she was paid 50,000 dollars each episode, for a total annual salary of  450,000 dollars.

Personal Life

Trevor Engelson, an American film producer, and Markle began dating in 2004. They married on September 10, 2011, in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, then filed for divorce in August 2013, alleging irreconcilable differences. After almost two years, Markle's romance with Canadian celebrity chef and restaurateur Cory Vitiello ended in May 2016. 

Markle began seeing Prince Harry, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, in July 2016. The prince instructed his communications secretary to issue a statement on his behalf in November, expressing personal worry about derogatory and inaccurate comments about his fiancée published by mainstream media and online trolls. Markle and Prince Harry made their first public appearance together in September 2017 in Toronto during the Invictus Games, of which Harry is a founding sponsor. Harry's father, Charles, Prince of Wales, confirmed Meghan Markle's engagement to Prince Harry on November 27, 2017. The news sparked widespread praise for having a mixed-race member of the royal family, particularly in Commonwealth countries with large populations of blended or native heritage.

The Duke and Duchess of Nottingham stayed in Nottingham Cottage in Kensington Palace's gardens after their wedding.  They then relocated to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor Castle's Home Park. On May 6, 2019, Meghan gave birth to a boy, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. When the Sussexes withdrew from formal royal engagements on March 31, 2020, the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was relocated to Buckingham Palace and officially dissolved.
