The Early Life of Melania Knauss

Melania was born in  Melanija Knavs, Germanized to Melania Knauss, in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, on April 26, 1970. (then part of communist Yugoslavia). Her father was a car salesman, while her mother was a children's apparel designer. She grew up with her younger sister in a humble environment and later realized she had an older half-brother from a prior relationship with her father.

Knavs began modelling at 5 years of age and began commercial work at the age of sixteen when she posed for Slovenian fashion photographer Stane Jerko. When she started working as a model, she changed her last name from "Knavs" in Slovene to "Knauss" in German. Knauss joined a modelling agency in Milan, Italy, when she was eighteen years old. She finished second in the Jana Magazine "Look of the Year" contest in Ljubljana in 1992, with the top three participants receiving an international modelling contract.

Melania Trump had kidney surgery on May 14, 2018 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington, D.C. Melania Trump underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney issue, and she will likely be in the hospital for the rest of the week, according to her office. In a statement, the first lady said, "The first lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children globally."
