Who is Michael Jordan?

Micheal Jefffrey Jordan who is also known by the initials MJ is one of the greatest basketball players of all time who completely dominated the game of basketball in the 90s. He is also an American Businessman and entrepreneur soon after he retired from the game of basketball. Micheal Jordan is also the principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association(NBA) and of 23XI Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series. Throughout his career in Basketball, he played 15 seasons in the NBA and was able to win six championships with the Chicago Bulls. Micheal Jordan played a very important role in helping to popularise the NBA around the world in the 1980s and in the 1990s and also in turn became a global cultural icon while doing it.

The Early life of Michael Jordan 

  • Micheal Jordan’s full name is Michael Jeffrey Jordan and he was born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn New York. He grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. From a young age, Micheal Jordan developed a competitive spirit and he wanted to win every game which he played. 

  • Jordan had a stable family life as a child. Delores, his mother, was a bank teller who went on to write numerous books. James, his father, worked for General Electric as a maintenance worker before becoming a manager. Larry, Deloris, Roslyn, and James Jr. were Jordan's four siblings.

  • James, who was Jordan's father, knew the potential of his son from the beginning and he was also the one who introduced Jordan to the game of Basketball and built a basketball court in their backyard. In the summer of 1993, James was murdered by two teenagers who shot him in his car in an apparent robbery as he was driving his car from Charlotte to Wilmington in North Carolina. James went missing for almost 11 days and sadly after a brief amount of time his body was found in a swamp in McColl, South Carolina. The two teens who brutally murdered him were caught and then were later convicted of the crimes and received a well-deserved life sentence for first-degree murder.

  • Micheal Jordan’s father was a very good man who from the beginning knew the potential which his son had. He taught Jordan to work hard and not be distracted or get tempted by street life. His mother on other hand taught him to clean, sew and do laundry. Micheal Jordan loved the game of basketball but sadly did not make his debut in the high school basketball team as a sophomore. This failure did not stop him or let him let go of his dream as he continued to practice and was successful in making it into the team next year. 

  • In 1982, Michel Jordan got himself enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel hill in 1981. Then, as time passed by, through dedication and hard work, he became a very important member of the school’s basketball team. In the year 1982, the University of North Carolina won the NCAA Division 1 championship with the help of Michel Jordan who scored the final basket to defeat Georgetown University. 

  • For both 1983 and 1984, Micheal Jordan was selected college player of the year by the Sporting News. After his junior year, he departed North Carolina to join the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA), where he was picked third overall in the 1984 draught.   • Due to a broken foot, Micheal Jordan missed the 64 games during the 1985 -86 NBA season but he then returned and scored 49 points against the Boston Celtics in the first game of the playoffs and then again scored 63 points in the second game which is considered to be an NBA record of its own. Jordan started in the All-Star game after receiving a record 1.5 million votes in the 1986–87 season, which was another one of his solo triumphs. He became the first player to reach 3,000 points in a single season since Wilt Chamberlain (1936–1999). Jordan was a personal success story, but the Bulls didn't make it past the first round of the playoffs until 1988. Jordan focused on honing his other basketball abilities, and he was awarded Defensive Player of the Year in 1988. He was also awarded MVP of the league, becoming the first player to lead the league in both scoring and steals. In that year's All-Star Game, he was voted MVP once more.

The Bulls' management built a formidable squad around Jordan by bringing in players like Scottie Pippen, Bill Cartwright, Horace Grant, and John Paxson. Due to a strong team and everyone’s effort, the Bulls won the 1991 NBA title by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers. The Bulls won the NBA title again the next year, defeating the Portland Trail Blazers. Jordan was also a member of the "Dream Team" that competed in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Professional athletes were allowed to compete in the Olympics when the Olympic Committee agreed to abolish the prohibition. The team won the gold medal with ease, winning each of their eight games by an average of 43.7 points.


Unexpected First Retirement 

  • In the year 1993, The Chicago Bulls met the Phoenix Suns for the NBA championships when they were successful in defeating the New York Knicks who were favorites at that time. In the final, Jordan's fierce gameplay nature helped the Chicago bulls to lift the NBA Championship for the third time and it was continuous. Due to Micheal Jordan’s gameplay, he was also named as the MVP player of the tournament. In the same summer, Micheal Jordan’s father James was brutally murdered by two young men during a robbery attempt. This incident changed Jordan’s life forever and he was shocked to find out about his father and the way he was killed.

Even though he was battling through the fact that his father was murdered, he was then blamed for gambling by many media houses and this led Micheal Jordan to take a major step in his life. He announced his retirement from professional basketball in October of the same year.

The NBA finals were played on Father’s day and exactly three years after his father’s death. 

  • The Chicago Bulls were the defending champions and had a more difficult season in 1996–97, but they nevertheless made the playoffs as predicted. The Bulls won their sixth NBA title thanks to sheer willpower. The squad was hampered by illness, injuries, and, at times, a lack of attention. Despite suffering from a stomach illness, Jordan led the squad to win in the fifth game of the finals. The Bulls were back in the playoffs in 1997–98, and they were up against some stiff opposition. They were able to win the NBA title once again, and Jordan won his sixth NBA finals MVP award.
