Early Life and Musical Influences
On July 26, 1943, Michael Philip Jagger was born into a middle-class background in Dartford, Kent. His grandfather, David Ernest Jagger, had been a teacher, and his father, Basil Fanshawe "Joe" Jagger (13 April 1913 – 11 November 2006), a fitness instructor, was indeed a physical education teacher who popularised basketball in Britain. His mother, Eva Ensley Mary, had been a hairdresser and Conservative Party activist who was raised in Australia, Sydney, of English ancestry. Chris Jagger (born December 19, 1947), Mick Jagger's younger brother, is indeed a musician. The two have collaborated on stage.
"As a kid, I was always singing." I was one of those children who simply enjoyed singing. Certain children sing in choruses, while others enjoy strutting their stuff in front of the mirror. I was a member of the church choir and enjoyed listening to singers mostly on the radio (BBC or Radio Luxembourg), as well as witnessing them on TV and in movies."
Before the Jagger family's 1954 relocation to Wilmington, Kent, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were pupils at Wentworth Primary School in Dartford in September 1950. In the very same year, he completed the eleven-plus exam and enrolled at Dartford Grammar School, which today houses the Mick Jagger Centre, dedicated after its most renowned graduate. When they moved to separate schools, Jagger and Richards lost touch, however after a chance meeting on platform two of Dartford railway station in July 1960, they rekindled their connection and found their mutual love of rhythm and blues, that for Jagger began with Little Richard.
After completing seven O-levels and two A-levels, Jagger decided to drop out of school in the year 1961. He and guitarist Brian Jones shared an apartment in Edith Grove, London, Chelsea, with Richards. While Richards and Jones prepared to form their own rhythm and blues band, Blues Incorporated, Jagger began to study finance and accounting there at the London School of Economics on a government scholarship.
Hits and Branching Out
Mick Jagger Young was dabbling in acting outside of the band. In the 1970 picture Ned Kelly, he played the titular role, a legendary bandit, and in In Performance, he played a recluse rock singer. Neither picture left a lasting impression on moviegoers.
Jagger remained a famous rock performer despite his lack of movie success. Sticky Fingers (1971), Exile on Main St. (1972), Some Girls (1978), Emotional Rescue (1980), and Tattoo You (1981) were all hit albums for the Stones in the 1970s and early 1980s (1981). By the mid-1980s, Jagger and Richards' relationship had become more strained. With mixed results, Jagger concentrated much of his energies on a solo career. While his first album, 1985's She's the Boss, went platinum, his second, Primitive Cool (1987), failed to pique the curiosity of music fans.
Hall of Fame and Later Albums
The Stones were elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Around this time, Jagger and Richards agreed to collaborate again, resulting in Steel Wheels (1989), which charted at No. 3 in the United States. The band went on a lot of tours to promote the album.
Mick Jagger young attempted his hand at another solo album, Wandering Spirit, in 1993, but it was met with lacklustre reception. The following year, with the Stones' third album, Voodoo Lounge, he fared significantly better (1994). The album got high praise from critics and was nominated for a Grammy for the best rock album. Between releasing Bridges to Babylon (1997) and A Bigger Bang (2005) with his band, Jagger re-emerged as a solo artist with Goddess in the Doorway (2001). He also made a name for himself as a film producer, working on films like The Women (2008) and Ruby Tuesday, an animated picture. When Prince Charles knighted Jagger in 2003, he was the picture of propriety, despite his reputation as a wild rockstar.
Historic Concert in Havana
On March 25, 2016, the Rolling Stones made history by performing a free concert in front of 500,000 people in Havana, Cuba, where their music had previously been prohibited by the country's Communist leadership for being subversive. The concert came only days after President Barack Obama paid a historic visit to Cuba as part of an effort to normalise US-Cuban relations.
"We had appeared in far too many great areas throughout our long career," the band said in a release, "however this performance in Havana would be a landmark for us, and, we believe, for all of our colleagues in Cuba; as well." The band's first performance in Cuba was in Havana's Ciudad Deportiva sports arena, and it was part of their 2016 South American tour.
Jagger and his bandmates continued to enthral audiences with their live performances, but they were forced to postpone a North American tour that was set to begin April 20, 2019, to permit Jagger to experience recovery from heart surgery.
