Chapter 12th of the CBSE Class 1 Hindi textbook is “Gaind Balla” meaning “Bat-ball”. It is a short and sweet story with which probably most of the Indian students can relate, and chances are all of you may already own a bat and a ball.

The story starts with the ball asking a question to the bat, why does the bat always hit him? In answer to that, the bat says that the game cannot be played if the bat stops hitting the ball. The next time the ball came near the bat, the bat hit the ball with all its strength, and the ball was thrown into the woods. This time, the ball decided to hide in the woods. The bat went to the woods to find the ball but could not find it. Now it was evening and the disappointed bat decided to go back by himself all alone. It was during this time that the ball came out of the woods and said loudly, "I am here! Get me". The bat took him out of the woods and the ball said, "Promise me that you will not hit me again."

The first exercise asks us to name a few games in which we are supposed to hit the ball with the bat just like we do in the Gilli-Danda. We have to name a total of six such games in particular.
The second exercise deals with reasoning skills. For starters, an example is given on the top like, “if the ball is lost, we cannot play bat-ball”. Similarly, you have to think about what happens when the gulli, manja, paasa (dice), and a chiddi is lost?
