The Mijbil The Otter is a story where the author Gavin Maxwell shares his humorous experience after keeping a pet otter. After his pet dog died, he felt very lonely. When he was travelling to Southern Iraq with his companion, he told his pal that his house in Scotland is surrounded by water which is perfect for keeping an otter as a pet. When he stayed in Basra in Iraq, his friend sent him an otter in his hotel room.

After keeping this otter, Gavin’s life has altered. He named it Mijbil. As time went on, Mijbil became comfortable with the surroundings in Basra. Meanwhile, the time came when Gavil had to return to London. But the British airlines didn’t allow him to travel with pets, so he had to book other airlines. He had to put Mijbil in the box for the flight journey.

Before he would leave for the flight, he put the otter in a box with holes and went to have a hurried meal. But when he entered his room, he was scared to see the box of Mijbil with scattered dried blood and Mijbil was missing from the box. Gavin took the wounded Mijbil and rushed to the airport for his flight.

He somehow managed to reach the airport on time. On the flight too, otter once again disappeared from the box making the flight passengers frightened. The air hostess on the flight took Mijbil and gave it to Gavin. Finally, Gavin reached London with his pet safely.

In London, Majbi started to love playing with marbles and ping-pong balls. In the streets of London, people could not recognize Mijbil as an otter. Some people thought it was a squirrel, some people thought it was a baby seal, and some even mistook it for a hippo.
