B. Short Answer Questions                                                      (2 Marks)

1. What made Taro run towards the sound of the stream?

Ans: When Taro was cutting the woods, he heard a sound of a stream which he never heard earlier in the forest. He was thirsty as he chopped the woods faster and non-stop. He ran in the direction of the sound.


2. Why did Taro work hard?

Ans: He worked hard to earn more money so he could provide a better life to his old parents.


3. What was the profession of Taro?

Ans: By profession, Taro was a wood-cutter. He cuts and chops wood and sells it to the nearby village market.


4. Despite doing the hard work, why did Taro not earn enough money?

Ans: Despite doing the hard work, Taro was not able to earn enough money because the price of wood was cheap.


5. Why did Taro’s neighbors leave his house in a hurry?

Ans: When the neighbors heard about the waterfall which gives sake, all the villagers leave Taro’s house in a hurry to see the waterfall in the forest behind the rock.


C.Short Answer Question                                                         (3 Marks)

1. What was the reaction of Taro’s father after drinking sake? 

Ans: Taro brought the sake and served it to his father. After drinking the sake his father became happy and full of joy. He stopped shivering and felt warm. He did a little dance in the middle of the floor.


2. Did the other villagers find the sake in the waterfall? Give a reason.

Ans: No, the villagers did not find the sake. 

The reasons for this are:

  • It was only for the one who was hard-working and obedient.

  • Taro was obedient and wanted to do more work to give a better life to his parents.


3. Why did the villagers want to drown Taro?

Ans:  When Taro narrated the story of sake in the forest, the villagers went to the forest to see it. They taste the waterfall. The taste of the waterfall was water, not the sake. The villagers thought Taro made them fool, so they wanted to drown Taro.


4. Why did the waterfall give Taro, the sake, and others only cold water?

Ans: The waterfall gives the Taro the sake and others only cold water because the waterfall only gives the sake to hard-working and obedient men. Taro was doing hard work so that he could provide his old father with the sake which warmed him up. The others were greedy.


5. Why did the emperor reward Taro?

Ans: The Japanese Emperor rewarded Taro with twenty pieces of gold as Taro was helpful, kind, and respectful to his parents. This way the emperor expressed his encouragement for children to look after their parents in their old age.


D.Long Answer Questions                                                         (5 Marks)

1. Write the first stanza of the poem ‘The Quarrel’.

Ans: The first stanza of the poem ‘The Quarrel’ is given below:

I quarreled with my brother 

I don’t know what about, 

One thing led to another 

And somehow, we fell out. 

The start of it was slight, 

The end of it was strong, 

He said he was right,

I knew he was wrong!


2. Describe Taro’s character. Was he respectful to his parents?

Ans: Taro was an obedient son to his parents. He was a hardworking man and of thoughtful nature. He wished to provide for all the needs of his old parents. He wanted his parents to have all the comfort he can provide. Thus he worked rigorously to earn a lot of money.  He was an emotional person because we see him feeling guilty when he was unable to give his father the best sake.

Taro was respectful as well as kind to his parents. His efforts of providing his old parents a comfortable life show his respectful behavior.


3. What made him sadder than ever? How did he cope with it?

Ans: One evening, when the Strong wind began to blow. It whistled through the cracks of huts and everyone felt cold. His old father had a wish to have sake which warms him up. Taro was unable to provide this. He was sadder than ever because of his inabilities.

He wakes up earlier and goes to his work. He used to cut and chop the woods even faster than before. He worked non-stop until he heard the sound of a stream. He went to check and find a waterfall. He was thirsty so he put the water in his mouth. The taste of water was like sake. He again tastes it to check and discovers that the waterfall was giving out the sake. He took out his pitcher and brought some sake for his old father.


4. Did Taro have to buy the expensive sake?

Ans: No, Taro did not have to buy expensive sake. The day, when he went to cut the woods to have more money, he heard the sound of a stream and found the waterfall behind the rock. The taste of the water was exactly the same as the sake. He took some sake in the pitcher for his old parents.


5. What is the moral of the story “Taro’s Reward”?

Ans: The story “Taro’s Reward’ gives us two morals:

  • If a person works hard and attempts to do better for others, he/she will always be repaid with even better things. 

  • An offspring must love, take care of, respect, and his/her parentsm, especially in their old age.  One must always be responsible towards his/her parents and never turn away from this responsibility.
