Ans: Algu Chowdhry and Jumman Shaikh had a close friendship. They were like brothers who also took care of each other’s family in their absence.

Ans: The relative who stayed with Jumman and his wife was an old aunt of Jumman for several years.
3. What happened to the old aunt’s property?
Ans: Jumman’s old aunt had given all her property to Jumman as he was the only one taking care of her.

1. Why did Jumman’s aunt ask him for the monthly allowance? What was his reaction?
Ans: Jumman's aunt requested a monthly allowance because she desired a separate kitchen from his wife and he was abusing and insulting her. When his aunt asked him for the money, he refused the idea and said that his wife knows well how to handle the household.
2. How did villagers react to knowing the condition of the aunt?
Ans: Some of the people were sympathetic to her position and offered her help, while others insulted her and laughed, and a few persuaded her to reconcile with Jumman and his wife.
3. Who was nominated as Head Panch in the case of the old aunt? What was Jumman’s reaction?
Ans: In the case of the old aunt, Algu Chowdhary, Jumman's best friend, was nominated as the head Panch. She only chose him for the job. Jumman was filled with joy as he thought that Algu would never go against his friend and would take a decision in his favour.
4. What was the decision taken by Algu in the case of the old aunt?
Ans: Algu was in a big problem when he was selected as the head panch as he was best friends with Jumman but also, he could not turn blind to the truth. As a result, Algu chose in favour of the old aunt and urged Jumman to pay her monthly payment, putting his friendship aside.
5. What did Sahu tell Algu when he asked for payment for his bullock?
Ans: Algu demanded money for the bullock, but Sahu refused and said he would not pay him because the bullock was useless to him and had died several days later, but if needed Algu can keep Sahu’s other bullock for a month.
D. Long Answer Questions: 5 Marks
1. Give a character sketch of Jumman.
Ans: Jumman Sheikh was a bad person at first because his aunt had a property in her name that Jumman wanted, so he was gentle with her, admired her, and acted well with her. But when the aunt made the plot to his name, he ill-treated her and did not provide her food. And when Algu agreed in his aunt’s favour, Jammu started resenting him. Though, with time when Jumman had to walk in Algu’s shoes, he realised that truth comes sooner than anything else.
2. Give a character sketch of Algu.
Ans: Algu Chaudhary was a real friend of Jumman sheik. He is a kind man. In the story, he plays the role of the head Panch in the case of Jumman’s aunt. He supported the truth rather than his best friend; this shows his truthfulness. And when Algu decided in his aunt’s favour, Jammu started resenting him. Algu Chaudhary was a good friend and a leader too. In the matter of bullock, he asked for Sahu to reimburse him back even after one month. But Sahu refused, to which Algu approached the Panchayat. The Panch head was Jumman then as he was Algu’s enemy. However, Jumman also chose truth and decided in Algu’s favour. They again became friends.
3. Why and what things did Jumman and his old aunt do before the Panchayat?
Ans: Jumman and his old aunt had shared an affectionate bond at first. However, the plot takes a turn when Jumman's attitude toward her aunt alters once she has handed over her property. He and his wife started treating her badly; they even taunted giving her food. One day an old lady got tired of it and demanded Jumman for a monthly payment so she can live independently, but Jumman disagrees with this also. So, the aunt agreed to go to the Panchayat and took the help of the villagers. Finally, the panchayat asks Jumman to give a monthly allowance to her aunt.
4. What was Jumman’s decision in Sahu and Algu’s case? What was Algu’s reaction?
Ans: In the issue of the bullock, Algu requested Sahu to pay him back even after a month. But Sahu refused, to which Algu approached the Panchayat. The Panch head was Jumman then as he was Algu’s enemy. However, Jumman also chose truth and took a decision in Algu’s favour and asked Samjhu Sahu to pay him back. After realizing the decision adopted by the Jumman, he also realised how hard it was the duty of the Head Panch and tells Panch has to be neutral. Algu accepts his apology, and they again become good friends.
5. What do you understand from the story “Fair Play”?
Ans: The story “Fair Play” has been written by Munshi Premchand. The story has two main characters who are best friends, but they somehow became enemies and after a few months again became friends. The story gives certain lessons, first and foremost, it shows that money is not everything. Family should always come first. In addition to it, it teaches us that we should never disrespect our elders. Moreover, it also shows us the importance of being polite and friends with one another. Lastly, the story conveys that Truth and justice come before friendship and relationships.
