2. Write down some differences between DNA and RNA?

Some differences are:

DNA-

  •  The location of DNA is the nucleus of the cell and the mitochondria.

  •  It contains 2-deoxyribose.

  • The function of DNA is the transmission of genetic material.

  •  It shows the phenomena of self-replication.

RNA-

  • The location of RNA is the nucleus, cytoplasm and ribosome.

  •  It contains ribose.

  • The function of RNA is the transmission of the genetic code which is required for the creation of proteins. It gets transmitted from the nucleus to the ribosome.

  • It gets synthesized from the DNA which means RNA does not get self-replicated.

3. What are the conditions for a molecule to act as genetic material?

Some conditions have to be fulfilled by a molecule to act as genetic material. This criterion is given below:

  • The molecule should self-replicate itself. It should show the process of replication.

  •  It should show stability both structurally and chemically.

  • The scope of mutation (small changes) should be provided by the molecule for       evolution.

  • The molecule should express itself in terms of Mendelian characters.

Both DNA and RNA can fulfill the above-mentioned conditions, therefore both are genetic materials. But among RNA and DNA, the best genetic material is DNA.

4. Write a short note on translation.

The process by which the amino acids change to form polypeptide through polymerization is known as translation. The sequence of bases in the mRNA decides the sequence and order of amino acids. These amino acids show the peptide bond and this bond requires some energy. In the presence of ATP, the amino acids get activated. They easily get linked to their cognate tRNA through the process called aminoacylation of tRNA or charging of tRNA. The catalyst enhances the formation of the peptide bond.

5. What are the goals of HGP?

The full form of HGP is Human Genome Project. There are some significant goals of HGP which are as follows:

  • In human DNA, it identifies approximately 20,000 to 25,000 genes.

  • The sequences of 3 million chemical base pairs that make the human DNA are determined by the Human Genome Project.

  • Storage of the information in databases.

  • Improvement of tools for data analysis.

  • The social, ethical and legal issues are shown by the HGP.

  • The HGP transfers the technologies to different sectors like industries.
