Sure there are differences when you study for the entrance exam and when studying for the boards. However, more students fail to realize that the core subject still remains the same and the same concepts have been applied to solve the multiple-choice questions and to answer the theoretical questions. While in the board exams you will have to elaborate on every single step along with good reasoning, entrance exams are more focused on getting to the right answer and do not expect to get to know how you reached there. In subjects like Chemistry, where there can be different types of questions set for objective and subjective types, the way you prepare for board exams and entrance exams can vary a little although the central ideas and concepts stay the same.

One of the biggest mistakes that students make while preparing for the Chemistry subject, is that they think of it as one of the easier subjects and thereby have a laid back and casual approach while studying and writing the paper. While it is true that Math and Physics are more demanding when compared to the difficulty level of the objective questions, one simply cannot afford to underestimate the lengthy subjective questions, tons of chemical reactions, and the difficult nomenclature that the Chemistry subject expects the students to be good at. It is hence recommended that every student take Chemistry just as seriously as other subjects and not think of it as one of the easier ones that can be dealt with, with relatively fewer studies.

The subject is divided broadly into three subcategories which are Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry. A good recommendation would be that the student identifies which one of the three is best suited for them and try to score the most in that. Physical Chemistry deals with Chapters like solid-state where there are numerous solid examples and formulas that one can go through during the preparation. As for Organic Chemistry, it is important to note that one simply cannot memorize all the reactions that are in the syllabus and that he or she is going to have to learn to get to the solution using the key concepts taught in class. When it comes to Inorganic Chemistry where students are expected to learn different types of trends in the periodic table along with tons of reactions, as well as properties of elements, it is very essential that the student makes their own notes to refer to in the future. 

A strong suggestion would be to understand the simple fact that Chemistry often tends to defy your expectations and you need to think twice before convincing yourself of the final answer. More often than not students are able to identify the sequence in which the forgiven elements would be placed in a particular order, but can't decide the direction in which inequality will bend. There are also tons of exceptions owing to which students find it difficult to study the subject. Constant revision and making notes of your own with important exceptions and also highlighting the key points as you study them can help you tackle such problems.
