IMEI Uses

Every GSM phone has an IMEI number, as GSM is a digital cellular system. Phone carriers and manufacturers share IMEI numbers to enable the tracking of stolen or compromised smartphones. This means that even with a new SIM card, the phone will be unable to make or receive calls or connect to the internet.

The identification number also provides information about the phone's brand, model, year of release, and other specifications.

When a mobile device connects to a network to make or receive a call, or send or receive a message, its IMEI number is automatically transmitted and tracked, allowing a phone-tracking application to locate the phone if it is lost or stolen.

IMEI VS. MEID

The Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) is a 14-digit number that uniquely identifies a particular cell phone. The MEID format was created to replace the Electric Serial Number (ESN) format, which ran out of unique identifiers in November 2008.

A MEID can be found on any phone that uses the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system and has a Sprint, Verizon, or U.S. Cellular cellular plan. If a phone has both an IMEI and a MEID, the MEID number is the IMEI number less the last digit.

The MEID number is 14 hexadecimal digits long. The 14 digits correspond to the IMEI digits, which are listed below in the WW-XXXXXX-YYYYYY format:

• The Type Allocation Code is WW-XXXXXXX (TAC). Identifies a specific wireless device model.

• YYYYYY: The device's serial number.

The IMEI number is made up of 15 decimal digits. Unlike the MEID number, the IMEI number includes a check digit at the end of the code (the Z at the end of the IMEI format), which is calculated using the Luhn formula to help prevent incorrect entries to the new Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) and Equipment Identity Register (EIR) equipment. The IMEI and MEID numbers have no functional difference.

Changing an IMEI

Changing your IMEI number entails replacing your old one with a new one. The following are some of the reasons why people choose to change their IMEI number.

• When a device is lost and reported to the carrier, its IMEI number is blacklisted. The blacklist is used by service providers to log devices that are ineligible to activate on their network. If you find your device, the blacklist status is unlikely to change and the phone will be inoperable. Changing the IMEI number will resolve the problem.

• Someone who finds or acquires a lost device may attempt to resell it. To do so, they would have to change the IMEI number, rendering the device untraceable and unreachable.

• An older device may no longer support or download new operating system updates. If a new IMEI number is generated, it can inform the phone's software servers that the phone is the most recent model, potentially allowing it to support new updates.
