(BTS on Spotify – Daily Global Streams as of 2020)

“We started to tell the stories that people wanted to hear and were ready to hear, stories that other people could not or would not tell. We said what other people were feeling—like pain, anxieties, and worries. That was our goal, to create this empathy that people can relate to.” – Suga, a BTS member.

2010 was the year when this famous boy band got formed. Until the year 2015 the band got recognition, 2016 was the year when their talent was actually noticed, and finally, 2017 led fandom across the world, and BTS became a hit. The growth of BTS after the year 2017 has sprouted even wider. The growth of the BTS Army established a great foothold in the era of pop culture.

BTS was originally a hip-hop group but while its formation between their initial and their debut, Bang Si-hyuk decided that the youth needed a featuring hero who could address their concern without the youth speaking or initiating any word, "a hero who can lend them a shoulder to lean on, even without speaking a single word".

For better analysis, we will point out the growth of BTS in the following way:

  1. The group was meant to debut in the year 2011 and thus it featured on several tracks by artists like 2 AM and Lee Seung-gi but the debut got postponed and then the group was reorganized into something more traditional idol group. The line-up was finalized with J-Hope, Suga, RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook in the year 2012. Months later after their debut, they started to get attention on social media websites, on song covers on YouTube and SoundCloud.

  2. Next, on June 12, 2013, the single album ‘2 Cool 4 Skool’ was out and the band became popular in South Korea. This was the first instalment in their “school trilogy” series. BTS won several New Artists Awards in the same year.

  1. In 2013, other lead single such as “No More Dream” and “We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2” were released but they were not a major hit. The band was consistent in their thought that the lyrics of their album reflected the mind of a school kid who is affected with misunderstanding and prejudice towards them. The criticism of society diminishing the kid’s dream and the resultant anxiety of the kid is highlighted in their albums. Suga and RM re-wrote the lyrics more than 20 times. Despite the critics and failure of the album, the group was determined to address the problem that no one talked about.

  2. September, in the year 2013, BTS released the second part to their "school trilogy,” added with their new single "N. O,” which peaked at number 92 in Korea. In terms of music, BTS did not change as they used fiery rapping along with trap beats, brass, and soulful melodies but lyrically, the group expanded on the theme of dreams and happiness, which revealed their frustration under the ruthless Korean education system.

  3. In the year 2014, January, the last act of their "school trilogy" was released and it topped the Gaon Album Chart by selling 100,000 copies in the year 2014 and over 250,000 copies in toto. In 2014, BTS made its first appearance on Billboard’s World Albums Chart, which ranked at number 3.

  4. Following Skool Luv Affair's release, BTS made their appearances on Korean music that broadcasts their first fan meeting. In March there were 3000 fans in Seoul. During that time in July, BTS conducted their first concert in the United States in West Hollywood for free to an audience of 200 fans.

  5. 2015–2016 marked the mainstream breakthrough and commercial success of BTS as they now shifted their sound and image from masculine hip hop to more diverse styles. BT in their music wanted to celebrate the ‘beauty and ‘anxiousness’ of the youth. How rich was their idea!

  6. “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” lyrics were based on the growth and emotional agony of youth along with their playful and uplifting sides.

  7. With another single named "Dope,” the band peaked at number three on  Billboard's World Digital Songs chart and this became their first music video to accrue over 100 million views on YouTube.

  8. In 2019, BTS was the most searched boy band in the world. Hence, the biggest artist in the present times.
