URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator, popularly referred to as web address is a reference to a web resource that describes its location on a computer network and a procedure for restoring it. A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is a unique form of Uniform Resource Identifier, although many people use both the term interchangeably. URL most commonly occurs with reference to web pages (http) but is also used for file transfer (ftp), email (mailto), database access (JDBC), and many applications.

Space is not at all allowed in the URL. Also, it is important to observe as recorded in RFC 1738, the URL string can only contain alphanumeric characters and characters !$-+*'(). Any other characters that are used in the URL must be encoded.
