PCO Full Form In Telecom

PCO in telecom stands for Public Call Office. It is a telephone service located in a public place in both India and Pakistan. In the United Kingdom, there is also another name for these public telephone boxes (postal address for these telephone kiosks sometimes known as PCO)

PCO Telecom Meaning 

PCO telecom is a telecommunication service located in a public place. Before the telecommunication revolution, it was an essential and successful means of inexpensive communication. Nowadays, everyone has their own cell phone or smartphone, but it was not commonly used in the early days. AT that time, PCO offered an affordable communication system in areas where it was much needed.


PCO  Telephone In India

In India, secured and automated (coin-operated public telephone ) versions of this service are in existence. BSNL, a public sector corporation, has the largest installation of  Public Call Office (PCO’s) in India. In India, the concept of PCO was introduced by Mr. R.L. Dube ( a Dept of telecom officer).  As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), there were approximately 4.2 billion (42 lakhs) PCOs operating in India in 2006.

Private sector operators such as Tata Indicom, Reliance Infocomm, Hutch, Idea, and Airtel are prepaid PCO providers and have an average number of PCOs in the public areas.

There are two types of Public Call Office PCO’s namely landline and wireless. The wireless PCOs use two technologies: GSM and CDMA. Tata Indicom and Reliance are CDMA- based prepaid PCO connection service providers whereas Idea, Hutch, and Airtel are GSM-based prepaid PCO connection service providers.

At first, the Department of Telecom, and later BSNL, MTNL, and Airtel offered fixed landline postpaid PCO connections. BSNl and MTNL also offer prepaid PCO connections.


PCO Telephone In Pakistan

In Pakistan, PCO telecom service is offered by Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL), Dancom, Telecard, Worldcall, and so on. These companies generally offer calling-card-based domestic and International telecom services.

In the US, secured and automated (coin-operated public telephone ) categories of this service are present. In the US, PCO services are offered by operators like Verizon and SBC telecom

Ans - Public Call Office which was once considered as an important telecom service that enables easy communication seems to be declined now. After a considerable struggle to operate a PCO, many self-employed people either choose to add the service they offer or simply close it down and look for other attractive alternatives. The introduction of mobile phones and attractive rates offered by mobile phone service providers are the primary reasons for the decline in PCO service offered by those businesses. The decline in PCO service is not a recent phenomenon. As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the decline in PCO service has been more observed since 2006, with about 2.6 lakhs telephone booths operating in the country being shut during September-December 2008 alone.
