SDO Full Form

SDO is an acronym for the expanded form Sub-Divisional Officer. A Sub-divisional Officer is badged as the chief civil officer of the sub-division. An SDO can be appointed in different governmental departments like in Civil department, Engineering department, there is also SDO in Electricity department, Water Department, Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Department of Posts, MES (Military Engineering Services), and so on.

The minimum qualification that is required for an SDO to appear in the exam is a Diploma (or any other course equivalent to this qualification) which is relevant to another discipline of Engineering i.e., Civil, electrical, or mechanical. There is a rise in the Civil Engineering government jobs. Getting a government job is a dream which is idolized by most people. 

The age limit to get in this job is between 21 to 30 years (while some relaxation is given for SC/ST candidates).

How to become an SDO?

The employees of the governmental department can have the chance of promotion to the post of SDO. This promotion will be based on their experience and performance level. The SDOs are recruited by the State government through an exam known as the PSC (expanded as Public Service Commission) exams. For the PSC exam, the minimum qualification required is a bachelor’s degree in the required field. Apart from this, the function of an SDO depends on the department to which he or she belongs.

SDO is generally selected in two ways by the government. First, an SDO can be chosen from the department’s promotion which is already mentioned. There are small officers working in that department who are promoted to the position of SDO for their work merit, while on the other hand, the government directly recruits SDOs for any of the governmental posts. Exams are also conducted in every state to select SDOs among them. Apart from this, one appearing for this exam should be of an age limit of 20-30 years. While for an SC or ST there is age relaxation. 

Exam for SDO 

As known, the SDO is a government officer, hence the government of each state also selects the SDO. The state government chooses SDO through the exam of PSC (Public Service Commission) in accordance with the Public Service Commission examination.

Every year, almost all the states conduct the Public Service Commission test for the selection of SDO, and all the interested candidates can appear for this exam by filling the examination form beforehand. The criteria for this examination are that the candidate should be a graduate in the field of the concerned department for which he or she is appearing. Like, one wants to become an SDO in the technical or electrical department, then for this, he or she must have a graduation in that specific field. 

Works of an SDO

The role of an SDO is as follows:

1. The SDO counts as the largest officer of his department where all other minor officers in its division are accountable or answerable to the SDO for their work.

2. SDO oversees the development work of their own area with the help of tehsildars and other officers in his department.

3. The SDO also takes notice of complaints of small officers when there is a public outcry.

4. The role of an SDO is similar to DM. What a DM is to the entire district, and SDO is the same to his department.

5. He acts as the main representative of the Deputy Commissioner.

6. An SDO is the mind of any developmental projects from the sub-division and he plays a significant role in coordinating all the functions of various sections.

7. An SDO takes decisions individually. He relies on his own decision as in the majority of the instances he is accountable to himself for everything which occurs in his subdivision.

8. He is responsible for the land earnings and exemption functions.

9. He serves as the Assistant Collector. This function is according to the Land Revenue Act and Punjab Tenancy functions.

10. In addition to this, he plays the role of an appellate authority which is accords to all the needs of his weak revenue officers.

SDO Salary

On a general basis, the monthly salary of an SDO is around Rs 23,640, this pay includes the Allowances and the Grades separately. While this is initially given to the newly recruited SDO officer.

Only after adding all the facilities and allowances received by the SDO, the salary of the SDO at the initial level can be Rs 51,378 per month while when he goes to the senior post, the officer’s salary can be more than this.
