SSC stands for Staff Selection Commission is an institution under the Government of India. Established in 1975, the institution aims to recruit a workforce for different posts in the various Ministries and Department of Government of India and subordinate offices.
The SSC headquarter is situated in New Delhi. At present, SSC has different offices in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Guwahati, Bangalore, and New Delhi. The SSC sub-regional offices are located at Raipur and Chandigarh.

SSC member is an attached office of Department of Personnel training which includes chairman, two members and a secretarial cum- controller of examination. His post is similar to the level of Additional Secretary of Government of India.
The estimate committee in the parliament suggested the setting up of the Service Selection Commission in the 47th report for examination to recruit lower category of posts.
Later, the Government of India constituted a commission on November 4, 1975 in the department of personnel and administrative reforms, which is known as the Subordinate Service Commission.
The Subordinate Service Commission on September 26, 1977, was renamed the Staff Service Commission.
The Staff Service Commission functions were reconsidered by the Government of India through the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances on May 21, 1999. Further, the new constitution and functions of the Staff Service Commission came into force on June 1, 1999. The SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination was organized by SSC every year for recruiting non - gazetted officers to various government jobs.

The Staff Selection Commission plays an important role in conducting open competitive examinations for students. Most importantly, these examinations are conducted because of the needs of the lower and middle-level workforce in the government. In the first stage, the written exam is conducted for the students. After the written examination, a personal interview is conducted by the SSC themself.
