Delhi is the Union territory of India and it was initially called the National Capital Territory of Delhi. After Mumbai, Delhi is the wealthiest city in India. Also, Delhi is one of the oldest cities in the world. Delhi is situated on the bank of the river Yamuna. It was bounded by Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Delhi was considered the northern center of India. This article is all about the chief ministers of Delhi. Also gave the information about their tenure and their party.

Administration of Delhi 

After Independence, New Delhi was administered by the chief commissioner. The chief commissioner of Delhi was appointed by the Government of India. By the Government of Part C state act 1951, Delhi lost its state status. As per the 69th Constitutional Amendment Act 1991, Delhi got the special state status and was declared as a National Capital Territory of Delhi. By that, the Government of India appointed the Lieutenant Governor to look after the administration of Delhi. The first Lieutenant Governor of Delhi was Aditya Nath Jha. And later became the Union territory of India under the sixth to ninth amendment act of the Indian Constitution 1993. Again, Delhi was kept under the control of the chief minister. In India, including Delhi, it has three union territories, which was kept under the control of the Chief minister. All other union territories in India were under the control of the Lieutenant Governor. In 1993, the legislative assembly was relaunched in Delhi. 


Now, Delhi is a union territory of India, which includes nine union territories. The Chief Minister of Delhi was considered as the chief executive of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.  Generally, for the Union territories, the president of India will appoint the Lieutenant Governor. But Pondicherry, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi have their own legislative assembly. And the citizens of the union territory can choose their chief minister as like states in India. 


The first legislative assembly election of Delhi was conducted in 1952. After Independence, Mr Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Yadav was the first person to become the Chief Minister of Delhi. He was a member of the Indian National Congress party. His term came to end in 1955. Then, Gurmukh Nihal Singh succeeded  Mr Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Yadav and served as the chief minister of Delhi. But, the chief minister post of Delhi was abolished by the government of India in 1956. Later, the post was resumed in 1993, which is after 37 years of abolishment. 


The current chief minister of Delhi is Arvind Kejriwal and he was the youngest chief minister of Delhi. For the third time, he captured the place and served as the chief minister of Delhi.
