Knowing about the Indian Governors

The Governor in India is the chief executive head of the state, and each state governor works representing the Central Government. Currently, India has 28 state governors and eight other administrators or the LG of Union Territories. After Girish Chandra Murmu resigned, Manoj Sinha was appointed as the 2nd and the current LG (Lieutenant Government of Jammu and Kashmir). In this article, we will provide you with a list of current governors of Indian States. Also, we will know about the states and their governors.

In this section, we will provide the list of present governors of India.

Articles 153 to 167 of Part VI of the Indian Constitution deal with the State Executive. The State Executive shall consist of the Governor, the Chief Minister, the Council of Ministers, and all the Advocate General of the State.

At present, India has around 28 state governors and other eight administrators also, there are LG of Union Territories. The Governor is known as the chief executive head of the state. But like the President of India, he is also a nominal executive. The Governor, in this case, will act as a representative of the Central Government.

Role of Governor of India

Discussing the Powers and functions of the Governor

The primary or the main function of the governor is to preserve, protect, and defend the constitution of India and also to protect the law which is incorporated under their oath of office (mentioned in Article 159) of the Indian constitution. This is in the administration of the State affairs. All the actions of the governor, his recommendations, and his supervisory powers (mentioned in Article 167c, Article 200, Article 213, Article 355, etc.) is dawned over the executive and the legislative entities of a State, which shall be used to implement the provisions of the Constitution. In this aspect, the governor has varied types of powers:

Executive powers this is related to administration, appointments, and removals.

Legislative powers are related to the law-making and about the state legislature, which is the Vidhan Sabha or Vidhaan Parishad.

Discretionary powers are also carried out according to the direction of the governor.


List Down The Duties of The Governor

The governor's main responsibilities are to:

  1. Serve the state's chief executive officer and oversee the functions of the executive branch of the particular government.

  2. Report to the General Assembly about the citizen’s condition of the state each January. 

  3. Recommend other legislation to the General Assembly. 

  4. Reviewing the bills which are approved by both the Indiana House and by the Senate.  The governor can also sign the legislation, which will later become law. In case a bill is vetoed, this returns to the General Assembly.

  5. Issue the executive orders on matters which are related and important to the state.

  6. Serve as the commander-in-chief of the state's armed or military forces.

  7. This governor may also grant reprieves, commutations, and pardons.

  • Eligibility Criteria:

  1. According to the Constitution of India, the following are the eligibility criteria for the appointment of the Governor in every state.

  2. He or she should be a citizen of India.

  3. He or she should have completed 35 years of age.

  • He or She Should not Hold Any Other Office of Profit.

He or she should not be a member of the Legislature of the Union or of any other state. While there is no bar to the selection of a Governor from amongst the members of the Legislature, but provided that on the appointment, he or she immediately ceases to be the Member of the Legislature.

  • What is the Salary of the Governor?

The monthly average salary of a Governor is estimated as Rs 1,10,000. The amount is specified in the Governor’s (Emoluments, Allowances, and Privileges) Act of the year 1982. The Governor is also entitled to certain other benefits and allowances, all these facilities shall not be diminished during his office term, which is for five years.

  • What are the Facilities Given to the Governor?

With the high monthly salary, the Governor is also entitled to a number of other special facilities like - medical facilities, reimbursement of phone and electricity bills, residence facilities, travelling facilities, and many such other allowances. 

  • How is the Governor Selected?

The Governor is not elected by the normal process of direct or indirect voting (like the Chief Minister or the Prime Minister or the President is being elected). The Governor of a particular state is actually appointed directly by the President of India. He serves a term of five years. The Governor should compulsorily meet all the eligibility criteria in order to be appointed by the President.
