ICSE Class 10 Physics Chapter 10 is on the topic ‘Electromagnetism’.

The topic ‘Electromagnetism’ surrounds the discovery of Hans Oersted, that when electric current is passed through a conducting wire, it produces a magnetic field. In this chapter, Class 10 students will learn about electromagnetism, polarity, solenoid, Maxwell’s rule, Fleming’s rule, electric motor, transformers, etc.

Some Short Notes from Important Topics in the Chapter

  • Electromagnetism - When current passes through a conductor, it produces a small magnetic field around it. This is called electromagnetism. The direction of the magnetic field that is produced due to the current in the conductor can be determined by the Right Hand Thumb Rule.

  • Electromagnets - An electromagnet is prepared by wounding a solenoid with a wire on a soft iron core. An electromagnet is always made of soft iron and not steel. This is because soft iron can be demagnetised easily, unlike steel. Electromagnet is a temporary magnet which can be demagnetised, i.e., made to be devoid of magnetism, which is not possible in a permanent magnet.

  • DC Motor - A DC Motor is a device which produces mechanical energy from electrical energy. The main parts of a dc motor are field magnet, armature, split rings or commutator and brushes. The speed of the motor is dependent on the strength of the magnetic field, current and turns of the armature coil.

  • AC Motor - An AC motor or generator does the opposite of what a DC Motor, i.e., produces mechanical energy from electrical energy. It works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. The magnetic flux linked with the conductor changes, so alternating electromotive force is produced in the coil.

  • Transformer - A transformer is a device, which can increase or decrease the amplitude of the alternating electromotive force. Transformer also works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Transformers are used for power generation at the generating stations and power transmission in the households.

FAQs on ICSE Class 10 Physics Chapter 10 - Electro-magnetism Revision Notes

1. Are revision notes very important for ICSE Class 10 Physics?

Yes, revision notes are very important, especially for board exams. They help students to study the entire syllabus in a compact form, before the board exams, so that students do not have to go through the entire book. In the book, usually the information is spread out and messy, so it becomes difficult for the students to understand which part to read. Revision notes also increase concentration and attention before the exams. Students can easily structure and remember the entire syllabus with the help of revision notes.

2. Other than revision notes, what else should ICSE Class 10 students give importance on?

Before everything, board examinees should read their books thoroughly and have a hold on the concepts that are explained in the book. Without having a proper understanding of the concepts, students will not be able to gain knowledge or fetch good marks in exams. After that, students should try solving the questions at the back of the chapter. It will help the students understand whether they have actually grasped the concepts given in the chapter. For Physics, students should also practice a lot of sums.

3. How many hours should a board examinee study for Class 10 Chapter 10 Physics?

There is no written rule mentioning the hours that a board examinee should study. It depends on the student’s memory, retaining capacity, concentration and attention. It is advisable that students make a study routine and follow it diligently before their exams. This will help them increase their attention span. Also, studying 24*7 is not advisable. Recreation is very important, as it helps the students to refresh their minds and retain the information that they have studied.
