Introduction to the Chapter

Chapter 21- Solids starts with an introduction where students get a gist about what terms like solids, volume, and the surface area mean. In this chapter, students will be studying how length, breadth, and height are known as the 3-Dimensions and the shapes having these are known as the 3-Dimensional shapes of 3-D shapes such as cuboid and cube.

For cuboid, which is a 3-D shape with six rectangular faces, you will learn to calculate the Total surface area(TSA), lateral surface area(LSA), volume(V), and length of the diagonal(d). For the cube, which is a 3-D figure consisting of six square faces. Here also, we learn about TSA, LSA, V, and d and how to calculate them using an edge of the cube (as length = breadth = height in a cube known as an edge or a).

The chapter then moves on to the Application of these terms in real life. Such as, to Calculate the cost of an article. For instance, if we buy petrol we calculate the total cost with the help of volume, then the cost of the total petrol will be calculated as: The quantity of petrol bought × rate of petrol.

The chapter ends with the explanation of the term cross-section in brief and how when a body has a uniform cross-section, it can be used for calculating the volume, surface area( excluding cross-section), and the flow of water (or any other liquid).
