1. What is the syllabus of ICSE Class 9 English literature?
The English literature exam covers poems, prose, and drama. Students have to answer questions from a few scenes of Act I, II, and III of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. There are five poems: The Bangle Sellers by Sarojini Naidu, The Cold Within by James Patrick Kinney, Television by Roald Dahl, Daffodils by William Wordsworth, and After Blenheim by Robert Southey. There are five short stories or prose: Old Man at the Bridge by Ernest Hemingway, A Horse, and Two Goats by R. K. Narayan, Hearts and Hands by O. Henry, A Face in the Dark by Ruskin Bond, and An Angel by Disguise by T. S. Arthur.
2. What are the marking criteria of ICSE Class 9 English?
Class 9 ICSE English syllabus is divided into two parts. The total marks for ICSE Class 9 English are two hundred, equally divided among two papers. Paper-I has four sections namely, Composition, Letter, Unseen Passage, and Grammar, and will carry a total of 80 marks, while 20 marks are assigned for class tests and projects. Paper-II has three sections, Play or Drama, Prose, and Poem and is also marked similar to Paper-I. The marking criteria depends on four major factors: recalling, using vocabulary, understanding or comprehending the central theme, and correlation to other areas.
3. How can I score good marks in ICSE Class 9 English?
ICSE tests the overall command and understanding of the English language. Therefore it is necessary that students develop good communication skills in English along with comprehension and reading skills. To score well in ICSE Class 9 English exam:
Students must understand the literature chapters well.
They must be thorough with the basics of English Grammar and Parts of Speech
Students must practice writing essays, letters, articles, etc well.
