JEE Advanced Important Questions of Aldehyde and Ketones
FAQs on JEE Advanced Aldehyde and Ketones Important Questions
1. What are aldehydes and ketones?
Aldehydes belongs to the carbonyl group in which one hydrogen atom is attached to a hydrogen group or a benzene ring. For example, Methanal, ethanal, propanal, 2-methylbutanal are some of the aldehydes. The chemical representation of all these might look similar but the difference is in the complexity of the compounds. On the other hand, ketones also belong to the carbonyl group in which two hydrocarbons are attached to it. It does not have a carbon atom attached to the carbonyl group. Propane, butanone are some of the examples of Ketones.
2. What is the silver mirror test in chemistry?
The silver mirror test also known as the Tollen’s test is taken for aldehydes and ketones. It is an important test to differentiate between aldehydes and ketones. In this test, silver salt is reduced to silver metal and aldehyde is oxidized to silver salt of carboxylic acid. To detect the function of the aldehyde group, tollen’s reagent is used. It is a solution of Silver nitrate and Ammonia. It is named after the German scientist who discovered it and its uses. It is based on the simple fact that aldehydes are oxidized fast while ketones do not oxidize fast.
3. How can reading important questions help students improve their scores in JEE?

5. What are the uses of aldehydes and ketones?
Aldehydes belongs to the carbonyl group in which one hydrogen atom is attached to a hydrogen group or a benzene ring. Uses of aldehydes:
Formaldehyde is a gas which is made of formalin used to store biological specimens
It is also used in germicides, glues, fungicides, and the tanning industry
Bakelites are used in coatings, plastics, and adhesives
Acetaldehyde is used in producing acetic acid.
Ketones also belong to the carbonyl group in which two hydrocarbons are attached. It does not have a carbon atom attached to the carbonyl group. Following are the uses of ketones:
The excellent solvent of synthetics fibers and plastics
Butanone is used in textile production, paint removers, paraffin waxes, etc.,
Cyclohexanone is used in the production process of nylon.
