Given the two surfaces are different. One is smooth and another is rough. They have different surfaces. The rough surface will have many irregular patterns on its surface making it rough. The movement through the rough surface is difficult. It will not allow a smooth motion. The friction is greater in the rough surfaces.
The expression for the frictional force is given as,
$F = \mu N$
Where, $\mu $ is the coefficient of friction and $N$ is the normal force acting between the body and the surface.
The direction of the frictional force is always opposite to the motion of the body. That’s why it resists the motion. Frictional force can slow down the movement.
If the same normal force is applied to both the smooth and rough surfaces, the coefficient of friction determines the frictional force. The coefficient of friction is greater for the rough surfaces hence they have irregularities on their surface. And for smooth surfaces the coefficient of friction is less. So the rough surface would have more frictional force than a smooth surface.
