The direction of $E$ is radially outward from $q$ if $q$ is positive, and radially inward if $q$ is negative.

The electric field $E$ at a point on the axial line of a dipole (distance $r$ from the centre of the dipole, with dipole moment $p=q \cdot 2a$) is:
