Hint: Chemical energy is released from burning the various fossil fuels by igniting them, it means that primary source is required to release the chemical energy.
Complete solution The energy possessed by coal, petroleum and natural gas is called chemical energy. This chemical energy is also termed as fuel energy due to the fact that coal, petroleum and natural gas are considered as the conventional type of fuels (or fossil fuels) to serve the various applications in real world.
The energy stored in the fossil fuels in the form of proper arrangement of molecules and held together by the chemical bond strongly. So, to break these chemical bonds some kind of energy is needed and at this time of breaking there is release of energy also that can be used for various purposes. The energy can be in the form of heat or light.
Note: Conservation of energy is followed as the amount of energy released from the fossil fuel is equal to the energy that is given to the fossil fuel.
