Conversion of Yard to Feet

Length is one of the seven fundamental physical quantities. We use different units of length. There are mainly two important systems of measurement for weight and distance, namely the metric system of measurement and the imperial system of measurement. In the imperial system of measurements, length is measured in inches, feet, and yards. Most of the countries in the world use metric systems of measurement.

Let us see what are the units of measurement of length in imperial systems of measurement in detail. We will also see how to convert the given length in yard to feet and then to inches using solved examples.

Metric System and Imperial System of Measurements

The two main important systems of measurement are the imperial and metric systems of measurements. In the metric system of measurement, length, mass, and volume are expressed in meter, gram and litre respectively. Large units are obtained by adding prefixes like kilo, mega, etc. to the base unit. Smaller units are obtained by adding prefixes like milli, micro, nano, etc. to the base units. Unit conversions in the metric system of measurement require the multiplication or division by powers of 10. Most of the countries use a metric system of measurements because of the convenience of conversions of units.

The imperial system of measurements was used in the UK before the 1970s. In the imperial system of measurement, the units of length are the inch, foot, yard, and miles based on their increasing order. Conversion of units is difficult in the imperial system of measurement compared to the metric system of measurements because we cannot use prefixes to convert larger or smaller units as in the case of the metric system of units. Imperial systems of measurement are still used in countries like the USA, Canada, UK, etc. for commercial and industrial use.

Imperial Units of measurement for Length

In olden times, imperial units were used which were not standardized properly. So, the problems were arising due to it until they were standardized. The units used in the imperial system of measurement are inches, feet, yards, and miles. The unit inch is based on a metric system which is defined legally as one inch is exactly equal to 2.54 cm. Let us see the interconversion between these units. One mile is equal to 1760 yards. 1 yard means 3 feet and a foot is equal to 12 inches.

1 mile = 1760 yards

1 yard = 3 feet

1 foot = 12 inches

The unit mile is denoted by the symbol mi. The unit yard is denoted by the symbol yd. The units feet and inches are denoted by the symbols ft and in respectively. Apart from these two symbols for feet and inches, they are also represented by prime and double prime respectively. For example, 2 feet 5 inches can be represented by 2’ 5”, 3 feet 11 inches is represented by 3’ 11’’. If the height of a man is represented by 6’ 2’’. This means that the height of the person is 6 feet and 2 inches.

Interconversion of Imperial Units of length.

As we have discussed earlier, one mile is equivalent to  1760 yards. So, we can write,

1 mile = 1760 yards

\[\frac{1}{1760} \] miles = 1 yard

Therefore to convert the given length in miles to yards, we have to multiply the given length in miles by 1760 to obtain the length in yards. Also, we have to multiply the given length in yards by \[\frac{1}{1760} \]  to obtain the length in miles.

One yard is equal to 3 feet. 1 yard in feet is given by,

1 yard = 3 feet

\[\frac{1}{3}\] yards = 1 foot

So we can convert the length given in yards to feet by multiplying the given length in yards by 3 to obtain the length in feet. Also, we have to divide the given length in feet by 3 to obtain the length in miles.

1 foot is equal to 12 inches. So, we can write,

1 foot = 12 inches

112foot = 1 inch

Multiply the given length in foot by 12 to convert the length given in foot to inches. To convert the length in inches to feet, divide the given length in inches by 3 to obtain the length in foot.

This is how we convert the given length into inches, feet, yards, or miles. Now, let us do some problems to familiarize ourselves with the conversion of yard to feet and vice versa.

Solved Examples:

1. The length of a football ground is measured in yards as130 yards. Express the length of the football field in feet and inches.

Ans:

The length of the football field in yards = l=130 yd

To convert the length in yard to feet, we must know 1 yard is how many feet. 1 yard means 3 feet.

1 yard in feet is given by

1 yard = 3 feet

Therefore, we have to multiply the length in yards by 3 to obtain the length in feet.

l=130 yd

l=130 3 ft

l=390  ft

Therefore, the length of the football field in feet is 390 ft. Now, we can convert the given length in feet to inches by multiplying the length in feet by 12.

l=390  ft

l=390 12 in

l=4680 in

2. The length and breadth of a rectangle are 12 inches and 6 inches respectively. Find the perimeter of the rectangle in feet.

Ans:

The length of the rectangle =l=12 in

The breadth of the rectangle =b=6 in

The formula to calculate the perimeter of the rectangle is given by,

P=2(l+b)

Where,

P- Perimeter of the rectangle

l- length of the rectangle

b- breadth of the rectangle

Substitute the values for length and breadth in the above formula for the perimeter to find the perimeter of the rectangle.

P=2(l+b)

P=2(12 in+6 in)

P=36 in

The perimeter is obtained as 36 in. Now, we have to convert the perimeter in inches to feet. For that, we have to divide the perimeter in inches by 12 to obtain the perimeter in feet.

⇒\[P = \frac{36}{12} ft\]

P=3  ft

P=36 in Therefore, the perimeter of the rectangle is 3 ft.

3. The length of the bridge is 61 yards. Convert this length to feet.

Ans:

The length of the bridge = 61 yards.

We already know 1 yard is how many feet. 1 yard means 3 feet.

1 yard = 3 feet

So, we can convert the yard to feet by multiplying the given length in yard by 3 to obtain the length in feet.

61 yard = 3 61 feet

1 yard = 183 feet

The given length in feet is 183 ft.

4. The height of a tsunami wave can reach upto a maximum height of  98 ft when it reaches shore. Find the maximum height in yards.

Ans:

The maximum height of the tsunami =h=98  ft

We know,

\[\frac{1}{3}\] yard = 1 feet

Therefore, we have to divide the given height by 3 to convert  the height from feet to yard.

h=98  ft

⇒\[h = \frac{98}{3} yd\]

h=32.66  yd

The maximum height of tsunami in yards is 32.66 yd.

The units used in the imperial system of measurement for length are inches, feet, yards, and miles. One mile is equal to 1760 yards, one yard is equal to 3 feet and one foot is equal to 12 inches. Unlike the metric system of measurement, it is not convenient to convert imperial units to smaller and larger units. We have also seen the solved examples involving the conversion of these units in the imperial system of measurement.

FAQs on How to Convert 1 Yard in Feet?

1. How many feet and inches are there in a yard?

In the imperial system of measurements, one yard is equal to three feet. Yard is a larger unit than feet. One foot is equal to 12 inches. Therefore, one yard is equal to 36 inches. Inches are smaller units than feet and yards.

2. Why imperial units for length like inches, feet, and yards are not widely used?

Metric systems of units are more popular than imperial units and widely accepted all over the world. In metric systems of units, units for length are meters, kilometers, etc. To convert the length in meters to smaller or larger units, we have to divide or multiply powers of 10 which is very convenient. It can be easily done even by moving the decimal point to the right or left accordingly. In imperial units, it is not easy to convert to smaller units or larger units. That is why imperial units are not popular and are confined to some countries nowadays.
