1. What is meant by the power of accommodation of the eye?
The lens of the eye is formed of a fibrous, jelly-like substance. The ciliary muscles present in the eyes can alter its curvature to some amount. Thus, the focal length of the eye lens can be adjusted by changing its curvature. This ability to adjust the lens's focal length is known as the power of accommodation. The normal eyesight of a human has the power of accommodation of 4 dioptres (D).
2. What is the far point and the near point of the human eye with normal vision?
The far point is the farthest range from the eye at which an object may be clearly perceived. The far point for a normal eye-sight is infinity.
Similarly, the near point is the closest to the eye where an object can be clearly seen. It is also referred to as the least distance of distinct vision. The near point for normal eye-sight is 25cms.
3. What are the three main defects of eye vision?
There are three primary types of visual refractive defects. These are as follows:
Myopia- Near-sightedness is referred to as myopia. Myopia causes a person to be unable to distinguish between nearby and distant objects.
Hypermetropia- Far-sightedness is another name for hypermetropia. Hypermetropia allows a person to see distant items clearly but not nearby objects.
Presbyopia- In this medical condition, without corrective eyeglasses, people find it challenging to see nearby objects.
4. What is atmospheric refraction?
Atmospheric refraction is the refraction of light that occurs due to Earth's atmosphere. The bending of light beams as they move through the layers of the earth's atmosphere, which have varied optical densities, causes atmospheric refraction.
The twinkling of stars is an example of atmospheric refraction. Before reaching the earth, starlight is refracted multiple times. It occurs because atmospheric refraction of the starlight happens in a continuously changing medium.
