FAQs on NCERT Solutions Class 11 English Woven Words Prose Chapter 3 The Rocking-Horse Winner

1. What is the symbol that helps define the theme in Class 11 English Woven Words Chapter 3 Prose?

Ans. One of the major themes in The Rocking-Horse Winner is materialism which is symbolised by the rocking-horse toy itself. Paul’s mother’s ability to gift expensive toys to her kids but not hire a tutor illustrates the family’s preference for material items over education. Paul’s obsessive attachment with the rocking-horse leading to his untimely death is also suggestive of the idea of how dangerous chasing wealth while solely functioning on one’s greed can be.

2. What is the main conflict in the story in CBSE Class 11 English Woven Words Chapter 3 Prose?

Ans. The primary conflict in The Rocking-Horse Winner is Paul’s mother’s constant desire to reach a financial status far from her family’s current circumstances and Paul’s subsequent attempt to fulfil his mother’s wishes.

Hester tells her son that one needed to have the luck to be wealthy and that her family’s debt was subject to her misfortune in marriage. Hearing this, Paul becomes determined to stop the haunting voices throughout the house and makes his mother happy by proving his luck to her. He does so by using his psychic powers to predict winning racehorses after riding his rocking horse, but his earned money fails to make his mother happy. It forms the central conflict of the story.

Ans. Bassett is a gardener at Paul’s residence and is also his comrade in his early betting. He is described as a young and short person with brown eyes, who has a wound in his left foot from World War I and is keen about horse racing.

Although Bassett’s awareness of his position as a servant in the household plays a good part in obliging him to take care of Paul’s secret, he primarily does so because of his relationship of mutual respect with the boy.

He never wanted money for himself but he wanted his mother to think of him as lucky and he became greedy to help his mother.
