Chapter 15 from NCERT EVS for Class 3 deals with the procedure and things required in making pots. There were two birds: a sparrow and a crow. The sparrow’s name was Phugudi and the crow’s name was Bhanate. They were very good friends. One day the crow told the sparrow that if she laid eggs first then she would eat them and if the crow laid eggs first then the sparrow could eat her eggs. They both agreed with each other.

After a few days, Phugudi laid eggs and the crow wanted to eat them as per their deal. The sparrow got scared and she thought of tricking Bhanate. She told Bhanate to first go and wash her beak in the river before eating the egg. She agreed. The crow went to the riverbank and asked the river for some water so she could wash her beak. Bhanate told the river that after washing her beak she would eat Phugudi’s egg. The river asked her to bring a pot to fill water. Bhanate then went to the potter and requested a pot so that she could fill some water in the pot to wash her beak.

The potter asked her to bring some clay from the clay-pit to make the pots. Bhanate went to the clay-pit and asked for some clay in order to make a pot. The clay-pit asked her to bring a trowel, to dig the soil, from the blacksmith. From the clay-pit, the crow went to the blacksmith to ask for a trowel to dig the soil and take the soil to the potter with which he would make a pot for the crow, and then she would get water from the river to wash her beak. The blacksmith agreed to give her the trowel and told her to return it.

Bhanate took the trowel and reached the clay-pit. It dug the soil and then she took the soil to the potter. The potter made a pot and then the crow took the pot to the riverbank and filled it with water. Bhanate finally washed her beak and ran to eat Phugudi’s egg. By the time she reached, the egg had already hatched and a little bird came out of it and flew far away from Bhanate.

Many many years back, people did not have pots. They wanted to cook and store food in some kind of vessel. After much thought, people learned to make pots. Initially, pots were made of stone and clay. They used to make the pots with their hands and then burnt them in the fire to make them stronger.
